The hooks are great, the production is addictive. Verse #1 is sang weirdly, but not awful. Verse #2 sounds like it was written the hour she found out Jeff Koons would make her album cover... It's still a solid choice for first single IMO, though I wish Sexxx Dreams had of taken single #3 over GUY. And yeah, I could have done with VOO-DON-NA-NA on ARTPOP too.

Applause verse 2 is flawless, better than the first.
The 2010 Gaga stan in me still exists in that I love how Applause was the comeback single upon which everything hinged, and yet she didn't come back with a basic cliched mess, but instead came with a song which was rather subversive lyrically.
The fact that it managed to become her fourth-longest stay in the US top ten speaks bounds about how effective it was as a pop song. As much as I would have loved Aura or Sexxx Dreams to be the lead single I think Applause did it's job wonderfully, and as a song is one of the few that truly delivers artpop on the album, imo.

ARTPOP is so underrated on ATRL. It's a great album.

I actually think Applause was a very obvious first single choice.

I couldn't agree more!
I actually thought "Applause" was touching in a way because it really was a kind of "I'm doing this for both of us" kind of acknowledgement, she even the screaming fans recording from one of the Born This Way Ball shows - I mean that's cool! And I mean everyone's torn down ARTPOP and fair enough it's not the most digestible pop, but what part of "ART" don't people get? I hate how anything she does with art is instantly ignored. The whole point of putting the word ART in front of POP is to highlight "This is art", something filmmakers like Baz Luhrmann do in their films through the use of unrealistic/over-the-top moments to snap viewers out of their mindless gaze to remember they are watching a film.
Gaga gets no credit these days and it's so unfair.

$9.99 for a damn rag (magazine is Ridiculous) but I bought it because it had Gaga's face on it.

I don't think Applause sat very well with the public (lyrically speaking). I know Kelly Osbourne was baiting Gaga, and for whatever reason, simply didn't like her. But when she tweeted; "I live for a cause, not for the Applause" I feel that reflected how a large portion of the general public were reacting to the song. It's kind of arrogant to get up and say "I live for tens of thousands of people cheering me on and worshipping me" - which is how I feel it was interpreted. It's not like they understand the narrative of "I'm in so much physical pain, but the fact that they love me so much is what's making me persevere and continue to keep going out on stage, even though it hurts."
That being said, a lot of the other lyrics are kind of wack. "One second I'm a Koons then suddenly the Koons is me." To put it algebraically, she's essentially saying "one second a = b, then suddenly b = a." It doesn't really make sense to me. One second she's a Koons. Then suddenly a Koons is her? To me it's just a weird way of making a lyric out of "Jeff Koons made a sculpture of me. I love art."
Also, another lyric that I feel the public didn't get, was "pop culture was in art, now art's in pop culture in me." It requires you to think about it. And for most people, it wouldn't really make sense. And when you finally can make sense of it, you understand the Warhol inspiration behind the lyric, in that she's saying "pop culture was in art" in the 1960's with Andy Warhol. But when she says "now art's in pop culture in meeee" - the issue of her somewhat Kanye-esque arrogance (as perceived by the public) comes back. Because by saying "now art's in pop culture in me" she's essentially implying that popular culture has been void of art in the absence of her. That kind of sounds like an insult to artists everywhere. Between Andy Warhol and Lady Gaga, there has been so much art made. Films, TV, music, visual arts, you name it.
I think that's where there's a massive disconnect between Lady Gaga and the general public. She's constantly asserting herself as an artist, and it makes it sound like she's insinuating that other recording artists aren't artists. But they are. That's why they're called recording artists. For example, everyone here remembers Adam Levine's tweets a few months ago about how he's a recording artist/singer, and he doesn't need any extra fluff/doesn't need to overtly tell everyone he can that he's an artist. To which Gaga replied "here comes the art police."
TLDR; I feel if she took the time to tweak a few lyrics, Applause would have connected with the general public a lot more, and would have sounded a lot less (I hate to say it) pretentious.

I really want her next album to be an homage to New York. The Roseland shows proved how great she is when she keeps NYC on her mind.
An album full of Brooklyn Nights, Beautiful Dirty Rich and Monster. SO here for it.

tbh I feel like so much of her career has already been an homage to New York. She constantly talks about it in her interviews and when talking about songs (not so much during ARTPOP, but definitely during The Fame, The Fame Monster and Born This Way)
I feel like she mentions being from New York more than she mentions being Italian. It's exhausting
It's a great idea, but I feel she's done it before and done it a lot. Done it to death, even. She's better off doing something COMPLETELY new and fresh. Especially in the wake of all this "career recapping" and "recreating the 3 other eras" that she's been doing since ARTPOP came out. She's only 5 years into her career. It's wayyy too early for that. There's still so much room and space for original content. "Art" isn't connecting wtih the GP. "New York" has been beaten to death. The whole world knows that's where she's from.

Valid, though I really just want her to do a concept that is down to earth. New York might be the most realistic theme for that kind of vibe.
The problem is that people expect her to transform. She recreates herself every day. It is going to be very hard for her to come up with something that will actually feel new to the GP

The verses in Applause don't make any sense, it's like she wrote a draft and used it. Much of ARTPOP could have been lyrical masterpieces because the ideas were there, but they still seem like concepts that weren't processed afterwards.
Applause is one of my favorites on ARTPOP

This is her biggest problem in my opinion. She reinvents herself too frequently and the public can't associate one look/reinvention with an album..
That's why I'm a Rihanna stan. When she Rihinvents herself, there's consistency to her eras. For example, Rated R she had the big blonde faux-hawk and everything she wore was black and edgy and spikey and leather. Then for LOUD she had bright red hair and everything she wore was either floral or colour-blocked. Vibrant colours and colour-blocked everything.
The greater public can attribute Gaga's platinum block-fringe and Versace sunnies to The Fame era. But they can't for ARTPOP. ARTPOP alone has seen like 47 different hairstyles and 192 clothing styles. it's not a good career movie. She needs to pick a look and stick with it for the duration of an album. Then reinvent herself with the next album, so that album has a 'look.' Otherwise it's too much of a mess.

I agree with this paragraph so much! She didn't remain consistent throughout the era. I still think there was something innovative with her G.U.Y. wig, it's a shame she doesn't wear it consistently.

I have a feeling she'll go back to it now that Roseland is over.

Seashell look was cute. She should have stuck with that look but adapted for Venus instead of the monstrosities she came up with.

Well seashells are still kinda relevant. She had the seashell bed in the G.U.Y video and she's telling people to wear them for the ArtRave, so I think it'll remain a theme for her tour.
But yeah, once she gave up on DWYW, she gave up on any full consistency.

I agree entirely, as long as we're talking lyrics. The double claps and very 8-bit sounding EDM production was fantastic and is one of her best hooks ever IMO. Even the first verse, if someone deciphered what she was saying with wanting an IV of fame because she can't bear to be without it... I know she meant it facetiously but it doesn't come across well at all.
...then you get lost in the heavenly chorus and forget how bad it was.
A-P (clap, clap), P-L (clap) A-U (clap clap) MAKE IT REAL LOUD (clap). Put your (clap clap) hands up, make them (clap) t-ouch (clap, clap) t-ouch (clap).
God that slays me.
