Ok...I have a point to make...
Why are we arguing this? First of all, no ones opinion is going to change on this. Secondly, who cares what genre an artist/group is in. Does it matter? Do you only listen to artists if they fit into a particular genre or do you listen to music that you simply like? If it is the latter (as I would expect), then this argument is kind of pointless.

^ I don't know what to do. I like this discussion but I also find it pointless. Very oxymoronic, don't you think?

^ LOL, I don't know what that means but I'm not being rude to you, I'm just saying it's kinda wierd to make people stop "arguing" in a fourm. You know?

These things are all always confused and tagged as R&B aritst? Yeah, no!
Mazen and myself were just debating on what's pop and what's r&b. In Mazen's opinion, he thinks aritist like Beyonce, Chris Brown, Ciara are R&B aritst. I can understand his arguement but if you really look into the roots of R&B, none of them apply. Throughout the years we have had so many true R&B greats, Lionel Riche, Patti Labelle, Stevie Wonder etc. We have also had many pop greats like Micheal Jackson, Janet Jackson etc. If you compare Micheal & Janet's music to the artist above, then compare Lionel & Patti's music to the aritst above, who's more similar? EXCACTLY. I really wish people would really experiment R&B and not throw it on acts that clearly aren't R&B. I'm not gonna lie, artist like Chris Brown, do have some what R&B tracks but almost all of his singles have been pop. Some true R&B singers today would be, Keyshia Cole, Fantasia, Raheem Davaugh, John Legend, ALicia Keys. THAT'S R&B.
That's all THANK YOU

I agree with you. Your argument is so true. It frustrates me how such artists can be labeled as R&B. I know that it can be both because many experiment from the newer generation side.
Personally I think that it's a race issue. If you're black and a singer, then you're R&B automatically. Same goes for any other genre, like Lenny Kravitz and Prince for example. I consider them Rock artists, but they get labeled as R&B.

^ It definatly a race issue. People can't accept a BLACK artist as Pop, as well as vise versa. You can't name one BLACK pop artist without an argument.

What I'd say is, Chris Brown, Beyonce and Ciara, are the new R&B of today. The music doesn't change, the name stays the same, but different instruments and stuff comes into the music for the sounds of the music genre to change. It happens with Pop too, I mean right now it's all about Electro Pop and Songwriter Pop e.g Colbie Caillat, John Mayer etc. I would say that Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin are the true R&B/Soul music, but Chris Brown, Ciara and Beyonce are our centuries R&B

^ If that's the case Justin Timberlake, Fergie, and Rihanna are R&B as well.

Not at all. We have plenty of true R&B artists, they just aren't popular and are often referred to as neo-soul, jazz vocalists, etc.
Beyonce, Chris Brown, Ciara, etc..Pop. They may have R&B influences, but they are pop.

Well to me, my thoughts were correct, but they are my thoughts, obviously everyone else is gonna have their own opinions on the subject. But I will stick to my guns and say my opinoin is correct, because people class these artists as R&B now, and todays new "R&B/Soul" is infusioned by Hip-Hop. But you all have your own opinions

Writer/producer Robert Palmer defined "rhythm & blues as a catchall term referring to any music that was made by and for black Americans."
Well that shows an earlier point

This is funny.
Oh and, I think I could name two black POP artists that would get no argument from anyone--Michael and Janet. They are most definitely pop with R&B influences but one listen to songs like "Thriller" or "Together Again" lets you know that they are pop, to the core.

^ yeah, I'm loving how you bring Janet is EVERYTHING but you are right. Janet & Micheal are pop to core which I explained in the first post.
