I go to a university where 80% of people are white and I always feel like they're speaking down upon me or think they're better than me. I ain't having it. I also feel like I gotta be perfect around them and speak "intelligently" so that they can respect me/not associate me with stereotypes. I hate that.

It's always gonna happen when you are in a predominately white setting. There are some great white people I would call friends, but for every great one there are plenty of racist trash. It's kinda sad though how any minority has to be prepared to face sch huge racism head on especially when they are young. It really effects you so heavily after a while

I'm puerto rican. I'm "light skin," but I hate that because white people don't see me as being white and black people dont see me as being black. I'm sort of stuck in this confusing buffer.

I remember when I was younger being nice, quiet, letting it be known I don't appreciate racism towards me in any form, respectful to other people. And I was still numerous times called a n.igger to the point where at times I expected just any & every white person to call me it at any given time. The quicker we realize we are not the issue the quicker to true freedom and self love we get. I also agree we need to focus much more on improving ourselves because every other community will use us as a comparison to gain sympathy. Then those same communities will pay us dust when we need them

Never did I blame black people for racism or say we have to "put on" for the white man. I just feel like we, as black people, can sometimes be our own worst enemy. We shouldn't put on for anyone and, it's true, that no matter how "good" we are that a racist is going to hate us no matter what; however, I do feel like we, as a race, have to truly want better for ourselves before we ever get to actually prosper. It just seems like sometimes we're comfortable with where we are and often glorify it. I'm just speaking from my own personal experiences. I guess, in reality, it's a problem for people as a whole, like you said G4L, but it sometimes seems like we and other minorities gets the brute of it because of discrimination and oppression. I guess I speak with a pro-active mentality because that's how I've always been. If I want to see something done or do something I don't feel like it'll be done unless I go out and make that thing happen, but with racism there's not anything we can really do that can change the minds of the ignorant; however, I wish we'd stop feeding some stereotypes not because it'll make white people see us in a more positive light, but because I don't like the negativity that it paints on our race period.

Yeah, I'm from an environment where whites are a minority and I was completely ignorant to racism. Hell I would even joke around and make "racist" jokes on here. Then I moved to one of the top universities in my state, but it's 80% white. My world changed. I find myself wondering why people have to be this way/act this way just because of my skin. It's so unfair. The other day a teacher asked me if I was a US citizen and I was appalled.

I get you, and I agree too. Only we can change the stereotypes now by pushing forward.

I'm not light skin, but I get what you mean. The Hispanic kids would look at me like when ever I spoke Spanish or told them I was PR.
The Black kids would think I was weird or just lying. Then I never really fit in with either, I still rep both equally though.

I understand you but I feel we need more emphasis on shedding light on the positive aspects, because there will always be the ratchet's. I have to understand that everyone has a different life I am not condoning it but I have never walked in their shoes so while I will try to help them be better, it all lies within them to change. It's already been proven there are more black men in college than jail. That the number of black women attending college and getting degrees are increasing, along with lower rates for teen pregnancy. We should be shoving those accomplishments down people's throats every single time because you can be racist all you want, but you can't rewrite facts.

Wow teachers are getting bold now . Damn what's next the janitor, your CEO and everything being racist to your face?? Not surprised I heard many people say racist stuff about all minorities/other people in my school to my face just to confess. It's as if these white people forget i'm black or something cause I can be so quiet, nice and laid back at times.

Death.
Could the Latino girls even speak spanish or were they one of those fake girls clinging to something that doesn't apply to them?
