The album sales were large back then because there were artists who actually gave a ****, introduced a new marketing facet ("idol culture)" and the invention and popularization of the CD. You can easily compare today's album sales to old album sales and see that Rihanna has sold the equivalent of 17 million albums in the U.S. despite heavy promotion, 7 studio albums, 50+ singles, etc. She's closer to Xtina's status in the U.S., but still trailing her by about 3 million. So if she plays runner-up to the first runner-up for the title, how can anyone even pretend she's the "Princess of Pop?"
