A sense of style (very important) and you have to be a little original. It helps if you have a great stylist. You have to take risks. Be consistent and commited to a look or a theme. But don't turn yourself into a cartoon.

Being a Fashion Icon is not about walking out of your house wearing coustumes or couture.

A fashion Icon influence the masses and the way the GP dress. We can say that about very few pop stars.

Ie. Madonna wore the cone bra, millions of teenage girls re-created that look by wearing their bras over their shirts.

Or when she wore those crazy bangles in the 80's, the girls tried to re-create that look.

People these days, don't know what a real fashion icon is.

As I said before, walking out of their houses in couture or in gaga's case in a costume isn't fashion Icon. It's influencing the masses and the way they dress and there's really no debate over it. You don't see hordes of girls trying to re-create any of those people's looks.
