I don't think we've had a solid good season of CAL ever.
CAL All Stars > CAL4 > CAL3 > CAL2
CAL2 was messy as hell but not to the point where the thread had to be closed, or tons of WPs were handed out at one period of time. And as far as innovative promo, graphics and stuff like that, CAL2 was just everything.
CAL 4 was the best season. It was brief but definitely was the most peaceful and tranquil season. CAL 3 was just arguments all the time.
Y'all that joined in CaL3 don't underSTAND. It was ALWAYS ARGUMENTS in CaL2. It was just brutal draggings daily. Y'all got the watered-down PG-13 version.
CAL2 was amazing in the sense of it being a new format of CAL, and everything at the time was new and innovative. It was always a race to see, who could do something new first, and everything was a lot more simple. People would get happy when albums did 200k+ in a week, and if a single did 300k+. The players all knew each other and would stan for each other's artists, and we had cute cliques.
The past seasons have been rehashes, the same ideas done by the same labels, the same people slaying / flopping. Adam was probably the least enjoyable host though, we won't get into that though. Another fued, another time.

The post-S2 draggings were more messy, but when S2 went in, we went IN. **** was brutal.
Season 2 was basically like ATRL with NHB, Old Blogs, and Dirty Talk. It was FREE FOR ALL.
S3-S5 have been kinda like present ATRL. No dragging to the extreme, no extreme fueds allowed, etc.
That's part of why Adam was my least favorite host though. He did really bad at controlling the game, and let EVERYONE drag -- we would even drag Adam, and he did nothing. I think the game could've done a lot better if we more appropriate hosts like Retro, and seasons not ending abruptly.
