(this isn't directed at you or any other poster, btw, just at GRRM himself.)
Let's all get real for a second and analyze whether it is truly necessary, and therefore acceptable, for GRRM to be taking so long with his books.
We shall turn now to most similar series to ASOIAF, The Wheel of Time. These are the two biggest and bestselling works of Fantasy literature by American authors since Lord of the Rings, and WoT was an influence on GRRM and its success paved the way in the publishing world for GRRM to be able to put out a large, multivolume single narrative work over a span of many years, so it is natural to compare the two works. Side note, Martin and Jordan are, to my knowledge, the only 2 fantasy authors to have more than 1 book debut at #1 on the NYT Bestseller list.
Let us look at the page #s and release dates for WoT.
Book 1: 1990, 688 pages
Book 2: 1990, 600 pages
Book 3: 1991, 624 pages
Book 4: 1992, 704 pages
Book 5: 1993, 704 pages
Book 6: 1994, 720 pages
Book 7: 1996, 720 pages
Book 8: 1998, 604 pages
Book 9: 2000, 668 pages
Book 10: 2003, 704 pages
Prequel: 2004, 304 pages
Book 11: 2005, 784 pages
And here the author dies with the series unfinished, leading to the phrase "pulling a Jordan" to enter fantasy fans' vernacular, namely when they express their fear that Martin will eventually do so. Luckily a new author was hired to flesh out an ending based on Jordan's copious notes. Subsequent books came out in 2009, 2010, and 2013.
(Those are hardcover pagecounts, and lots of them have small print. The paperback for book 6 is over 1000 pages.)
There. Proof that it DOES NOT TAKE 5 years to write a damn book. Then 6 years to write the next, and so on. Anyone who thinks GRRM's publishing schedule is excusable is uninformed and misguided.
Sorry to come in here and go off on a minirant, but I'm just so tired of apologists who think fans should lighten up and cut GRRM some slack. I hear people saying that all the time and it's just baffling to me that anyone could think that way. George needs to sit his fat ass down and WRITE.
