I agree with your analogy. You either pass or you don't. You either have a hit single or you don't. It's really black and white. So why are you making it deeper than it is? The Billboard #'s tell us the relative popularity of each single to the other. Not it's absolute success (see: "Sail"). Dark Horse was/is more popular, however both songs are still hits.
So who's really beating the dead horse? I mean what do you want me to say? DIL flopped?

Again a #2 hit is an underperformance? A #5 hit is an underperformance? A #8 hit is an underperformance? I'm not sure how plausible your militant definition of a "hit" is.
