I can see that, but to my knowledge Avril never truly tried to criticize pop music, so much as she just tried to offer herself as an alternative to the airbrushed poptarts for the more angsty teens. Which was fine. Lorde's approach (at least in the two singles she's released stateside so far) is just smug and wrongheaded. Her critiques of pop music are largely baseless and inaccurate.
Lorde's much smarter and quite arguably a better songwriter than Avril is, but she'll never make anything as good as "I'm With You" or "Complicated" because she'll always be trying too hard to seem cerebral and artsy.
