If Universal was really trying to "manufacture" Lorde into the next big phenomenon, don't you think they'd hook her up with more well known producers than somebody completely irrelevant who has next to NO back catalogue?

I can see that, but to my knowledge Avril never truly tried to criticize pop music, so much as she just tried to offer herself as an alternative to the airbrushed poptarts for the more angsty teens. That was for publishing rights. She signed with SONGS Publishing in November 2013.

Record contracts and publishing contracts are different.
