Those are the songs I don't even usually type a good draft for and throw away. I find it so hard to just be "okay you're gonna write about this topic today" I need to either be super depressed or in a drunken stupor to write.

I'm more common with the A option. Some of My choruses could slay a b***h but the rest couldn't be f***ed any less than the man on the moon.
When I write, I need to be either f**ked off or just casual.

See I find there's been times where I write something that I think will be the verse but it ends up being the chorus. Thing is though I find the chorus is so strong that any verses I write are relatively weak and effects how smooth the whole song is.

I find that to be the case for me sometimes. The song about my grandmother, that I thought would be the introduction, ended up being the chorus. I find most of my stuff lyrically creative, but just weak in general, but the chorus to be full of slayage.

I always come up with a great chorus and then struggle to find a verse or even more annoyingly a chorus and 2 verses then no bridge
So many potentially great songs that I just end up giving up on

I only ever really write when I'm depressed or anxious about something.
That said, that anxiety could be positive, or a form of excitement-based anxiety.
I've been writing songs all my life, & have hundreds stored away on my computer.
I guess it's a form of therapy for me.
Sometimes I'll write stream-of-consciousness type songs or poetry, I guess... & other times I'll write verse-chorus-verse-chorus-bridge-chorus etc. songs.
When it comes to writing, I'm sort of weird. I can go days & months without writing anything, but then lines & ideas will start forming in my head out of nowhere. By that point, I need to run off to anywhere appropriate & write it all out of my system. Sometimes I'll write all day, or write anywhere from 1-3 songs a day for a week long stretch or something. It's kind of weird, but I enjoy it, because it de-stresses me.
...And I'm also certain I have quite a few SMASHES in my songwriting folder, too.
Sia, where you at, sis?

Heart Lines
Verse:
For a little while
Our hearts have been unaligned
I wanna figure out
What I don’t know
Feet off of the ground
And you’re not here to remind
Me when I’m falling down
Out of control
Hook:
I’ve been feeling down
Lost with an end to find
When you are not around
Where did you go?
Outside of this town
Our heartbeats will intertwine
When will our love be found?
Will you let me know?
|
I think you used some interesting word choices. You probably were not thinking like this but I like how there's a sense of being lost in the words. It's like I get the message, it's just worded strangely. And the song from what I gather is about being lost without someone. So I thought that was really cool actually.

I'm working on lyrics right now, y'all are so inspiring
This is a little rough draft portion on some lyrics I'm working on right now. The song's in 5/8 so I needed to make my meter really precise with the melody; no added syllables, otherwise this would be (more) impossible to sing! I tried to change up my writing style for this song and make it more words of wisdom rather than my usual moping in sadness. It's a really fast, jazzy song.
.
Verse I
You make me leave, valediction
I need you too much
Instead of feeding addiction
Let go of the clutch
Not that I mind your company
It’s that I don’t mind
I never will accompany
Don’t need to remind
Chorus
Don’t choose battles
Choose victories
When you can’t win
Epiphany
You need quarantine

I'm working on another song, (love obviously).
Like I posted earlier, I don't usually like taking long but I kept the verses and just waiting for the right chorus.

I hate when I'm working on lyrics and I have the perfect verses and absolutely NO ideas for a chorus whatsoever.... Like why? And when I have the perfect Chorus the verses don't seem to fit.
As a writer though I do write better when I start off with a chorus, I think it's because I end up telling the story AROUND the chorus rather than building up to the main point. (that's just how my mind works I think)

So I thought I'd just share this here. Its one of my few songs where I didn't come up with the title first, but its one of my favorite titles. I wrote it last April when a guy at my school committed suicide. I was with his best friend while it happened. He just seemed so lost. I remember someone saying "just wait 5 years and all your problems will go away". I just thought, how can you wait 5 years? Thats a long time to wait to get better. Also there were shooting stars that night, the first time I'd ever seen one. So here's the song:
No Love In A Gun
They say just wait 5 years and it will all be gone
But I don't know if I can wait that long for someone to talk to
They say look up
But that's just not enough
When the clouds cover and surround the sun
Chorus:
Just because you're a falling star
Don't mean you have to fall hard
There's no love in a gun
No change until death has begun
If you want to get away from pain
Just look for the love
And you'll overcome
Beat like a drum
Cause there's no love in a gun
When you left you took a piece of me
That will never come back
Cause death takes more just a life
It takes the souls of a village
I feel so dumb, cause I can't get you back
I wish you saw everything you had
Chorus
I live for the future
Cause that's the best part of this life in my eyes
Live for the lost ones
Let them know I do it with pride
I'm gonna survive
Chorus
He died on the 1 year anniversary of another guy I knew that committed suicide that used to sit by me at lunch my freshman year. Its always April. I have another song I'm gonna write soon called April Showers about this. I wrote a good hook for it, but I ended up using the melody for another song I wrote called Titanic so I have to come up with a new one.

Same! I typically just think of a catchy chorus randomly, so I write it down then work from there. Idk how people start from verse 1 because I tried before and struggled forever.

That's how I am too in general. But my songwriting can be pretty sporadic. Sometimes I'll just try going from the 1st verse and it works, sometimes it doesn't. Usually I start with a title, then a hook/chorus , then the rest is just random.

I did this chorus but idk what to write for the verses. Help!
Where am I supposed to go now
When there's no one else around
To keep me from going down
Into the deep sea, for eternity
Into the place where you're lost but not found
Please tell me, where do I go now

I'm liking what I'm reading so far. I definitely get an empowering vibe from it but it's more unique. I'd be interested to hear how it's sung.

Wow, I loved this! And the background behind it is really heartbreaking but you managed to turn it into something really empowering. I get a real Christina Aguilera vibe from it for some reason but I would love to hear how it is sung if you ever decide to try to record it!
