Florence and the others were better singers but they were too 'soulful' and not at all marketable to the whites. Diana's voice was poppy and that's why she was put front and center. Because her voice lacks personality. Pop voices in general lack depth - Diana, Britney, Spice Girls, Madonna, etc. That blandness allows for every listener to relate to the singer. Why do you think someone who was more vocally gifted - Florence & Mary - didn't sing lead? Because they were "too Black" sounding, and that was not the objective of Motown.
Nevertheless, Donna still reigns.
