What have I said that demonstrates a lack of knowledge of any religion though? I have actually studied them all, so you're going to have to come a little harder than that!
I didn't even mention you and you responded. A hit dog hollers
People used Christianity to justify slavery. The idea that you can't criticize something because it's religion is just another one of those weird things that "progressives" have been embracing lately that's actually really conservative and backwards
Just like the idea of "cultural appropriation" occurring anytime two cultures interact. The thought process there is that you an identify a racial identity of a person, then the proper racial identity of an action, and then check the two for racial alignment. That on its own is such an anti-progressive way of thinking about culture, especially in the internet age. People need to get a clue and not just use these buzzwords.
ok, but cultural appropriation is real in some aspects... what would we sooner see on the Hot 100: a white woman dressing in a kimono selling her asian-pop inspired music or an actual asian artist? white ppl always getting the praise and credit off of other people's stuff while the ethnics don't prosper/profit.
on a more serious note, war bonnets. they actually represent something. ppl would be insulted if i walked around with vietnam war medals as a fashion statement when war bonnets hold a similar meaning in NA culture.
I don't like the idea that people shouldn't do something just because its from another culture that's really idiotic, but I do understand the argument some people give about it. Like how women who wear the hijab are looked down upon, but if suddenly Anna Wintour featured a spread in vogue with pretty white models and then celebrities started wearing it and then the hijab is in! I can see why people would be mad.
Yes, there are problems when items with sacred meaning are used out of context, or when issues of oppression play directly into the matter. But people "appropriate" in every culture. Look how many corners of the globe American hip-hop has spread to.
When I came to the USA for school (I'm Canadian), I couldn't believe that people pledged allegiance, I found it so odd and like that Brit said, Nazi-German-esque.
I mean, "culture and perspective" has lead to slavery, genocide, thousands of wars, sexism, racism, homophobia, etc.
Making it harder or inappropriate to call a spade a spade doesn't help solve the problem.
Human nature caused those things too. Hatred caused those things too. What are you gonna do about those things?
It's no one's place to call someone out on what they decide to wear or worship because of how you view it. You're approaching those people with your own brainwashed mindset. Based on your own cultural values and whatnot. Like I said, you'd be shocked @ how people from other countries view the Pledge of Allegiance.
You won't catch me arguing anyone down who decides to wear hijab. Which is what this entire debate was about in the first place til you took it to a whole nother level as always

And in Asian countries, you're far more likely to see an "actual asian artist" perform a rap song than a black African American artist, or a rock song than a white American artist.
Almost everything is cultural appropriation on some level.
It is weird, but I see it justified as us lacking perspective.
For example, I remember getting into this long ass debate with a Brit before who couldn't believe that in the US the Pledge of Allegiance is even a thing. He called it fascist and likened it to something Nazi-Germany used to have kids do in school.
I'm over here like , what do you mean?!? The Pledge of Allegiance isn't fascist! It's all about culture and perspective.
Oh. Well I don't like the Pledge either. But not for the facist reason.

What are you talking about? I don't think the hijab is sexist and I think women should be allowed to wear them. But the crux of your argument is "Well you can't tell someone you think they're wrong because it's their religion," and that's ridiculous. People use religion to justify horrible things all the time. It's like you said, it's human nature. Religion doesn't get a pass from being judged like the rest of human nature. Religion isn't a "get out of criticism free" card. That's dangerous thinking, and it leads to real oppression.
Do you understand that in the 1800s, you would be told what you're telling me about slavery? That you were just approaching black people with your "brainwashed mindset" and that you'd be shown scripture in the Bible that "supports Slavery?"
Duh. Alot of people get money from their parents or outside sources to pay for dorms/housing, and use that money primarily to party and travel.
I'm so glad I'm Canadian b/c our current generation in the US is gonna be in so much debt. I just can't believe people would pay 20k+/year for a bachelor degree. Like....
Our education system and healthcare systems are so awful. In a country of over 300m people, you would think we would make the most of the generated tax revenue but we do not. Most of our tax money go into defense which is ridiculously overfunded
