... but Caine and Cage weren't really in the running.

DDL was out in front, but a) no one actually LIKED Gangs of New York (ten nominations/no wins hihi) and b) he was supporting in the Lead category. Works for women, usually doesn't work for men.

Nicholson was considered in second, but no Payne movie has ever won an acting Oscar - Payne has a lot of detractors amongst the industry in general.

That was the last year (IIRC) that the Oscars were held at the end of March, and so The Pianist was able to build a surprising amount of buzz. If voting had lasted for an extra week, it would have won Picture.

Mariah's voice was in pristine condition back then, but as a performer, she was weak. Watch any performance of her in a group. She always fades to the back, making sure not to step on any toes Whitney and Celine have commanding presences.

How come Kate Winslet was nominated for Supporting at GG but Lead at Oscars for the same role? What kinda category fraud?

In the '90s MMc was full of talent and promise. They called him the Paul Newman (just look at his old magazine covers). But then he spent the next 15 years making crap movies. Major letdown. And then with The Lincoln Lawyer a couple years ago it all began to change. He'd been written off but he came back out of nowhere and became exciting again with one great performance after another. Hollywood loves this kind of comeback story. He's going to win. The reward is not just for Dallas Buyers Club, but for all his work since The Lincoln Lawyer.

So Harvey Weinstein and Scott Rudin, two mega producers, hate each other.

In 2008, Harvey was distributing The Reader, Winless her :supporting: bid.

Rudin was behind Revolutionary Road, her :lead: bid.

She was on the cover of Vanity Fair saying she really wanted an Oscar. She was working on her sixth nomination. "Greatest actress of her generation (who can't do an American accent to save her life)." Hence, her double Globe wins.

BAFTA, unlike the other awards bodies, decides category placement on their own. They saw that Winless her role in The Reader was a LEAD, and nominated her for both performances - they can do that, AMPAS can't.

So essentially a whisper campaign was started to nominate Kate in Lead for The Reader and not Revolutionary Road. Guess hew started it hihi.

I hope Leonardo DiCaprio ramps up his campaigning then, because I would much rather see Leo win, than McConaughey. McConaughey's whole "I've changed my career for the better" narrative is starting to get really irritating. We get it, you've stopped doing romantic comedies, big deal. Don't get me wrong, i like his new direction; Killer Joe is cool, I really liked Bernie, and I LOVED Mud, but it's not like any of them are masterpieces. And Dallas Buyers Club isn't so much a film as it is an actor's showcase. I just don't see why/how this narrative of his has been exaggerated to the point where he's the frontrunner to win. Not to mention his performance isn't even that amazing anyway! And don't get me started on the exploitation of the weight-loss....

Anyway, rant over. I'll shut up now.

So, it's basically narrative working in MMc's favor. We'll see. I think this year will pull off a surprising winner.
