Like streaking naked at your grandmother's funeral, duetting with Christina Aguilera, Lil' Kim and Mya on 'Lady Marmalade' might raise your profile, but it isn't going to win you any respect. So, if sense prevailed, Pink's credibility recovery should start here.

It doesn't. Because while the language bending of 'M!ssundaztood''s title suggests hip-hop trickery, it really spells out - albeit badly - a case of mistaken identity.

No longer content with cruising the pop/R&B interface, this is where Pink ditches the sassy street style to reveal her ambition to be an Alanis Morissette-style singer-songwriter. So, rather than draft in The Neptunes or Timbaland to add some spectacular sheen, over half this album was co-written and produced by a talent as stellar as Linda Perry of ancient moan rockers 4 Non Blondes.


It works for the red-raw confessional 'Family Portrait', but everything else is so bad Natalie Imbruglia would be proud. So 'Don't Let Me Get In' and 'Dear Diary' see all pop joy expunged for acoustic seriousness, dreary unobtrusive beats and lyrics about relationship woes and record company badness. It gets worse, as she trills throughout like an Aguilera-clone, fatuously compares her childhood to savage fighting in South East Asia on 'My Vietnam' or displays the kind of clod-hopping attention-seeking on single 'Get The Party Started' that makes you assume you're listening to a Geri Halliwell record.


Remarkably, merely by being upbeat, it's one of the best tracks here.


It's bad. Don't misunderstand us now.

Rolling Stone: "Even if her execution isn't up to her ambitions, Missundaztood is more fun than that god-awful "Lady Marmalade" remake."

Dot Magazine: "Anyone looking for some spicy R'n'B to follow up Pink's fantastic breakthrough hit, 'Most Girls', will be sorely disappointed."

Spin: "These tunes dig deeper than the musings of, say, Michelle Branch, but none are groundbreaking or revealing enough to suggest that Pink has learned to navigate the space between fluffy and toughie."

Blender: "The melodic shortcomings of M!ssundaztood show that those eye-popping videos aside, she's no Madonna."

Just laughing because so many of these same publications now want her to return to her Missundaztood form.

Mhmm. Before I entered standom I thought it'd be Try This, but alas... I wonder why people dislike it so much. It's one of her most coherent albums, excluding a few songs... *glares at Tonight's the Night, God is a DJ etc, but the album wouldn't be the same without them.

CTMH is a mess, but it has loads of great songs on it. Can't Take Me Home (the song) for the next tour?

In my mind, they should be ranked by critical acclaim in this order:

What is awful about TTAL?

Greg Kurstin. Cheesy production. Overmixed vocal channels. P(o)oppy sound. Are We All We Are. True Love. Beam Me UpomgI'mgonnafallasleep. Is This Thing On and My Signature Move. The album got old very quickly, I don't even listen to most of the songs anymore. Chaos&Piss and Timebomb slays tho.

I can't even. AWAWA is amazing.

I agree about the overmixed, at times almost robotic vocals in the Greg tracks but TTAL has more than five good songs so that automatically makes it better than FH.
