Liam is a mess but his tweets aren't homophobic. I've actually watched the show and the Robertsons actually do display family values. Yes some family members have said anti-gay stuff (which I'm not defending) but they do stuff which shows their feelings about the importance of family. They work together at their business which they have turned into an empire. It's possible that Liam thinks that great. Doesn't mean he doesn't like gay people.

Telling someone who made a very public homophobic statement that you appreciate that they stand for "family values" is going to be read as homophobic. The face of homophobia in America is the politicians who use "family values" as a platform. Stop trying to ignore the obvious context here.

Yes but "family values" has been the excuse of every political figure going after gays. "We don't hate gays we just want to preserve family values" = "we hate gays".

Tweeting support to people who have said those things is the same as tweeting it yourself. I got that this is a mistake though, I just think he should own up to it and stop blaming the media.

I guess this relies a lot on the interpretation you give to "family values". The term is associated with conservative people, but is actually a very vague term, and just because it's associated with homophobic people doesn't mean that all the people who use it do it in the same context.

I'm gay and I believe in family values, as I want to have a family at some point of my life, and I'm totally against homophobia.

When did I say he was a politician? You do realize that you don't actually have to be a politician to know about politics and political history?

He should have known what it looked like he was saying and blaming other people for his mistake is pathetic and childish.

Family value's is a religious/conservative term and it's very political. Sure it's not always about hating gays (or some other minority) but he claims to admire the "family value's" of these people who have made it quite clear what they mean by that.

Well it's very rarely not associated with religious conservatism but sure. He tweeted support for people who have come out against gay people. He specifically mentioned "family values" and as I already said that term has often been used as an argument against gay people.

How else is it meant to look? For the record I am pretty sure this is all just a mistake but it's his mistake and he should have known better. I was just clarifying why that particular term was important. It was the reason people jumped to that conclusion so quickly.
