I agree. Max Martin only sounds 'generic' because he has been so successful, such that it is his sound that has become the mainstream sound at the top of the charts for more than a decade.
Taylor is only 'mainstream' because her songs have proven incredibly popular, making her the biggest American artist of her time.
disagreed ! before MM, Come On Over was successful (very different from MM tunes) and after Britney & BSB and there were Norah Jones & Usher, you can be successful and not generic, Supernatural was as huge as Millenium and BOMT though it was really praised by critics, AOTY, SOTY & ROTY at the Grammys etc...
