That's the main reason I like Christina! And why I kind of like Janet and Rihanna too.
I get what you mean, but I think mentally, it was too much to handle for Christina. It was like she went straight from Bionic to her divorce to Burlesque to three back to back seasons of The Voice while recording Lotus. Not to mention various kinds of media backlash. Maybe some people could handle all of that and be unfazed, but I think she definitely suffered from some depression during that time.
She just wasn't really mentally ready for Lotus. She never wanted wanted to do two seasons of the show in one year anyway.
I mean one season off from The Voice did such wonders for her.
'Slay Something' is #5 this week. Sales are amazing, airplay is increasing (it got a +3.5 million update today ), but streaming is just...
What can they do to get this song to #1? 'Dark Horse' will surpass 'SS' next week, 'Timber' is a beast, 'CS' has twice as much airplay and 'TM' will take a whole lot of time to fall

I think a performance at the Grammys(or anywhere else) could help. Do ballad-type songs generally have longevity at the top of the charts(compared with up-tempos)? I'm not really a chart expert, so I don't know about this stuff.

Ballads don't really have many advantages. Half of the radio formats snub them, streaming is weak and sales are their only saving grace. What makes 'SS' different to the average ballad is that the sales are mind blowing. It will be double platinum next week!
I think the only way 'SS' can go #1 (and it won't last more than one week) is a Grammy's performance and an iTunes discount in the same week. Of course it won't be done because labels never discount songs while selling well, but it would help the song a lot.

In that case, SS is doing very well imo. I didn't know that ballads are at a disadvantage.

Things are getting better now. Rihanna, P!nk and Bruno both got hit ballads in 2013. Adele's success definitely opened doors.
I think that 'SS' would have easily gone #1 if there weren't so many huge songs in the Top 3 right now. If it's a slow burner though, it could still get there in Feb/ March. 'CS' has been out for ages and it just got a new peak on the Hot 100.
