It scares me to know that the current generation of high scholers probably don't even know the queen.

It doesn't matter if the current generation knows her or not. This generation is not her audience nor are they the audience that made her a star. They aren't obligated to know her. I'm sure everybody at least knows who Janet is, they just may not know her catalog. I know first hand that virtually no one in my high school were familiar with Madonna or Prince's catalog. Especially Prince. It doesn't diminish their impact. Times change and new cycles of artists come out so naturally the focus will shift to the newer artists. What Janet needs to do is not make music for this generation. For one, most of the kids from this generation only care about hits and catchy beats, not substance. Secondly, this generation doesn't buy music; but Janet's generation would buy her stuff if it appeals to them. She needs not repeat songs like "feedback" and "Call On Me" to appeal to the ITunes generation. Cuz even though Feedback slays, it did nothing for her legacy and Call On Me was just awful.
