Except that radio is dying AND those particular formats always play songs by their core artists regardless of genre so how is that fair? Taylor Swift is *****d out on country radio with her pop songs, Beyonce's Irreplaceable went #1 on Urban radio for a billion weeks and IIWAB almost made the Top 10....both those songs are straight up pop. But because the program director feels like they need to play every Beyonce song on Urban radio, it should rank high on the chart?
There's no way for everything to be perfect but Billboard's current chart is the best that it can be. The old way really makes no sense in the new digital world.

They aren't just one person though. There's more than one radio station & if Urban stations spun according to the new R&B charts there would be backlash & they would have to adjust what they spin to cater to the community so they don't switch stations, etc.
What backlash does Billboard get? A few threads on ATRL?

Audience impressions are at an all-time high, just this year the record for the most in one week was broken.
That obviously has do with the radio shoving songs down your face more, but also spin records are constantly being broken and formats/panels continue to grow.
I could be wrong, but it seems too healthy to be on it's way to the grave. Not when 20 years ago, 91 million audience impressions was the record and now 228 million in a week is.

Radio has not gotten stronger, just more consolidated with clear channel owning everything now

Obviously, this isn't just about Brandy. And if it is, for you, let me assure you, I really like Brandy too! I had a chance to speak with her at the Billboard Music Awards afterparty in May, and I assure you, I walked away thinking there couldn't possibly be a more lovely person.

Probably lying through his teeth, and was talking to Gaga or Katy.

They play the same songs over and over. That's it. It is dying, less and less people are listening. There's articles everywhere, lol.

The fans have no direct voice with radio. It's a push format -- someone else decides what you're going to listen to, and with what frequency. Are those of you upset about this rule change suggesting that what fans are streaming on Spotify or buying at iTunes shouldn't count? Fans have the power today -- more than they have ever had in the history of the recorded music business -- and these chart changes honor that reality, above all else.

Not them saying this, not when they adjusted airplay that same month to keep Gangnam Style from #1 despite it's huge fan following. Whew, Billboard is a joke!

I might be one of the rare black people in the middle with this. If the album is good their race doesn't matter to me BUT putting Macklemore album over Kendrick album? What are these people smoking? He just irks me with this.

Remember when they said twerking was popularized by Miley? At this point they ain't even trying to hide their bias.

Twerking WAS popularized by Miley. All the random middle aged and old white people had no idea what it was before she did it. It's just how American society is.

Popularized is to be made Popular. Twerking wasn't known to white girls, but it was still POPULAR.
She may have introduced it to a new audience, but it was already popularized or best believe she wouldn't have knew of it.

Someone needs to forward every point made in this thread to Billboard. I'd love to see Bill's response.

I tweeted 6 people over @ Billboard on Twitter the thread and asked them what do they think of it.
Maybe if more people tweet they'll just check since it'll be all on their Timelines. They only have a few hundred/thousand followers too.

It was POPULAR among a certain group but it wasn't even a fraction of what it is now. It's pretty obvious what they meant by it. At this point, everyone in America knows what twerking is and it's basically synonymous with Miley.

Yeah.
Clear Channel's monopoly over radio is the sole reason for the inflated AI's.

Well of course when a white person does something (Miley) it's going to become more popular but it was already a popular dance in urban culture. This was something done in numerous rap videos in the past before miley did that video of it. Most likely where she got it from.

I agree. Like I said, it's just how American culture and society is. We are still a very racist society, it has just become more subtle and underlying.

It's horrible. And notice how the songs fly up (and down) the charts SO fast now. It's all so in sync. Before 2011, it was so rare that a song would get a +2000 bullet on Pop and now there are always multiple songs getting +2000-3000 bullets on the regular as they race up the chart, and of course the +4000-5000 first weeks due to the deals. What a mess.

The term "twerking" is synonymous with Miley (trash is too), but shaking your ass as was not popularized by Miley. She made it cool for Beckys to do it, but white America knew what it was and shamed popular rappers for portraying women in such a light. But ass shaking is nothing new to them; it just became cool for them to do with because of Miley.

So much truth.
Speaking of that skank, I hate when white people/her stans are all like "the URBAN community loves her!!1111" and think they "black" cause they listen to her.

Agreed, the payola is so obvious on pop radio these days. I've always wondered if the same thing happens to urban radio, anybody have an answer? Like on pop radio there are songs that the GP are clearly not here for, yet are shoved down people's throats. Does that ever happen on urban radio?
