Salamence is boring. Standard dragon design, woo I roar and spit fire etc. He was temporarily a better Dragonite but now Dragonite has snatched his crown BACK with Multiscale (and, of late, Weakness Policy).
At least Altaria her design is unique. She was shafted by Gamefreak in the stat department but she slays NEWAYZ.

Not this discussion again though  Moxie Scarfed Salamence > Multiscale Dragonite. Dragonite is more versatile, but Salamence slays D-Nite as a sweeper (and that's pretty much what D-Nite is mainly used for).
And Altaria's design ain't THAT unique. If I didn't know he was a Dragon-type, I'd probably mistake him as one of the basic early flying types (Noctowl, Pidgeot, etc).

I also use FlyGOD v much. He's not boring like Salamence and he isn't ugly like Garchomp! Gamefreak gifted Flygon's typing to the ugliest dragon, I mean, I can't.

But Dragonite his versatility is what has him popular right now. I mean with Multiscale/Weakness Policy he can set up a +3 atk and +1 speed boost in ONE turn. I never see Salamence and altho he slays a bit with Moxie he is boring and predictable! Dragonite can run so many sets effectively, the TRUE king. Salamence was lucky to snatch his crown for a brief generation.

I'll be honest, I haven't catched up with Gen VI, so let me just... 
Oh, and Salamence snatched D-Nite ha raggedy ass crown for three gens in a row (3 to 5). King Sala will snatch ha weave back in Gen VII

Not yet, they seem to be working on it. It's all still a mess because of their stupid policies and Pokebank not being released yet.
