BEST ALBUMS OF 2013
#50. Icona Pop
This Is... Icona Pop
|
This Is... Icona Pop is the second studio album and debut international album by Swedish duo Icona Pop, released on September 24, 2013 by Record Company TEN and Big Beat Records in the US. This Is... Icona Pop is a good album, solid and really catchy with amazing eletronic influence but to be honest the album is kinda week, I was expecting more.
Genre: Eletrocpop / Eletronic / pop
Favorite Tracks:
1. I Love It (feat. Charli XCX)
2. We Got the World/All Night
3. In The Stars
4. Girlfriend/Just Another Night |
#49. Strange Talk
Cast Away
|
Strange Talk's debut studio album, Cast Away, was released on 8 February 2013 by Fine Time and Sony Music Australia. It charted at number fifty-six on the Australian Albums Chart. I was expecting for this album a long time, but I don't know, the album is a little overrated for me. Cast Away would be more higher, synthpop bands are amazing and really catchy.
Genre: Synthpop, Electropop, Indie
Favorite Tracks:
1. So So La La
2. Falling In Love
3. Cast Away
4. Picking Up All the Pieces/Cast Away |
#48. Basshunter
Calling Time
 |
Calling Time is the fourth studio album by Swedish eurodance musician Basshunter. Oh god, what a mess for this era. I'm a big fan of Basshunter, I really like his music but this era is a mess. When I heard Calling Time I hated the album, I was very dissapointed but the album is ok for me now.
Genre: Eurodance / Dance
Favorite Tracks:
1. Far Away
2. Northern Light
3. Saturday/Calling Time
4. Dream On The Dancefloor |
#47.Ellie Goulding
Halcyon Days (Deluxe Edition)
|
In an interview with Elle in July 2013, Goulding announced the reissue of Halcyon, titled Halcyon Days, commenting, "I have such an affinity with electronic music that I can't step away from it." She added that the expanded album would contain ten newly recorded songs to supplement the deluxe version of the original album' That's why I'm not a big fan of Halcyon Deluxe Version, but I really like the original album and I love Ellie, she's one of my favorite girls. Maybe next year I'll give more attention to this version.
Genre: Eletronic / Synthpop / Pop
Favorite Tracks:
1. Goodness Gracious
2. Without Your Love
3. Burn
4. How Long Will I Love You |
#46. Drake
Nothing Was the Same
|
Nothing Was the Same is the third studio album by Canadian recording artist Drake. The album was released on September 24, 2013, in North America by OVO Sound, Young Money Entertainment, Cash Money Records, and Republic Records. Work on the record began in 2012 and continued through 2013. As its executive producer, Drake enlisted collaborators including 2 Chainz, Big Sean, Jay Z, Jhené Aiko, and Sampha to appear as guest appearances on the album. The album's production was primarily handled by Noah "40" Shebib, and other OVO Sound producers; Boi-1da, Mike Zombie, Majid Jordan, and Nineteen85 among others such as, Chilly Gonzales, Detail, Key Wane, Hudson Mohawke, and Jake One. Well, I'm not a fan of hip hop, so this is a honor for Drake be here. I always liked some single of him but I never heard any album of him. Nothing Was The Same is a good album, I love his slow songs. I gave attention for Nothing Was The Same because I love Hold On, We're Going Home and I'm glad to hear other amazing songs on the album like HOWG.
Genre: Hip Hop
Favorite Tracks:
1. Hold On, We're Going Home (feat. Majid Jordan)
2. Too Much
3. From Time (feat. Jhene Aiko)
4. Own It/Worst Behavior/Started from the Bottom |
#45. Arcade Fire
Reflektor
|
Reflektor is the fourth studio album by Canadian indie rock band Arcade Fire, released on October 28, 2013 on Merge Records. A double album, Reflektor was co-produced by former LCD Soundsystem frontman James Murphy, regular Arcade Fire producer Markus Dravs, and the band itself. Influenced by Haitian rara music, the 1959 film Black Orpheus and Søren Kierkegaard's essay, "The Present Age", Reflektor's release was preceded by a guerrilla marketing campaign inspired by veve drawings, and the release of a limited edition single, "Reflektor", credited to the fictional band, The Reflektors, on September 9, 2013. Reflektor has received acclaim from music critics. At Metacritic, which assigns a normalized rating out of 100 to reviews from mainstream critics, the album received a average score of 80 based on 48 reviews, indicating "generally favorable reviews". Rolling Stone gave the album a rating of four and a half stars out of five, and stated "It is also a perfect summary of their group's still-fervent indie-born hunger after a decade of mainstream success, and specifically, the decisive, indulgent ambition on Reflektor: a two-record, 75-minute set of 13 songs and the best album Arcade Fire have ever made". Pitchfork Media gave the album a 9.2, the band's highest rating since their debut Funeral, stating "Reflektor is a triumph, but not a victory lap; the band never sounds content enough for that." This is a shame position for this amazing album, I KNOW. Well, I had no time to listen this album as I wish. That's why "Reflektor" is so low. I'll give more attention for this album next year.
Genre: Indie Rock
Favorite Tracks:
1. Afterlife
2. Reflektor
3. You Already Know
4. It's Never Over (Oh Orpheus) / Supersymmetry |
#44. Placebo
Loud Like Love
|
Loud Like Love is the seventh studio album by British alternative rock band Placebo, released on 16 September 2013. "Loud Like Love" was met with generally mixed reviews from music critics. The album holds a Metascore of 55 at Metacritic, which indicates a mixed or average reception. At Alternative Press, Mischa Pearlman told that "too much of this album comes off like self-parody, meaning it's a far cry from the pulverizing of their best work", so Pearlman affirmed that "Unfortunately, the naysayers will have a field day with this seventh album." Allmusic said that "many of these songs play like less-alienated, if no less paranoid, OK Computer-era Radiohead cuts," adding that "however, the songs here are still laden with Molko's high-pitched vocals, which he characteristically uses to play the eternally angst-ridden and alienated teenager -- something the band's fans will surely appreciate," giving the album 3.5 stars out of five. Amanda Arber of Clash said that Loud Like Love is "easy to absorb musically and easy to ignore lyrically," and that "Loud Like Love is 50 minutes of simply okay alt-rock." The Guardian gave the album two stars out of five, saying "the veteran band sticks to what it knows for Loud Like Love." I don't know what Brian Molko has but I love his voice, really beautiful. I will give more attention for this album next year because Loud Like Love is really good.
Genre: Alternative Rock
Favorite Tracks:
1. Loud Like Love
2. A Million Little Pieces
3. Too Many Friends
4. Bosco/Purify |
#43. Avicii
True
|
True is the debut studio album by Swedish disc jockey (DJ) Avicii. It was released on 13 September 2013 through PRMD Music / Universal Island and its affiliated Universal Music record labels. True features collaborations with American guitarist and producer Nile Rodgers, country musician Mac Davis, Mike Einziger of American rock band Incubus, American soul singer Aloe Blacc, Dan Reynolds of American rock band Imagine Dragons (his vocals were featured in a version released on SoundCloud, though the album release of "Heart Upon my Sleeve" did not), singer and songwriter Dan Tyminski of bluegrass band Alison Krauss and Union Station, singer and songwriter Sterling Fox, and American singer and songwriter Adam Lambert. Avicii said that sonically, the album would move away from his electronic dance and house music sound on previous records, by incorporating elements of other genres such as country music. The album has been commercially successful, peaking within the top ten of at least ten countries, including debuting at number two in the United Kingdom. True received generally positive reviews. At Metacritic, which assigns a rating out of 100 to reviews from mainstream critics, the album received an average score of 69, based on 7 reviews, which indicates "generally positive reviews". Well, True was not I was expecting from Avicii. I always appreciated Avicii and I was expecting more songs like his old singles, Silhouettes, Fade Into Darkness and I Could Be The One, but ok, Wake Me Up was love at the first time but the album took me a little time to give more attention. I almost like the whole album but I wish I had heard more because the album has amazing productions. I'm happy for Avicii cause this year as amazing for him. He had worldwide success with True.
Genre: Eletronic / House
Favorite Tracks:
1. Dear Boy
2. Wake Me Up
3. Hope There's Someone
4. Hey Brother/Addicted To You |
#42. The Neighbourhood
I Love You
|
I Love You is the debut studio album by American alternative rock band The Neighbourhood, which was released worldwide on April 22, 2013. Critical response to I Love You. was mixed; aggregating website, Metacritic, reports a weighted average rating of 48, based on 8 reviews, indicating "mixed or average reviews". I don't know what to say about I love You, at the first time I really liked but then the album became a little overrated for me. Anyway, awesome debut album for The Neighbourhood, really solid.
Genre: Alternative Rock / Indie Pop
Favorite Tracks:
1. Sweater Weather
2. Staying Up/Alleyways
3. Female Robbery/Afraid
4. Everybody's Watching Me (Uh Oh) |
#41. Goldfrapp
Tales of Us
|
Tales of Us is the sixth studio album by English electronic music duo Goldfrapp, released on 6 September 2013 by Mute Records. Tales of Us has received generally positive reviews from music critics. At Metacritic, which assigns a rating out of 100 to reviews from mainstream critics, the album received an average score of 74 based on 25 reviews. AllMusic's wrote that although "Tales of Us isn't as immediate as, say, Supernature", it is "Goldfrapp's most sophisticated work to date, and one of their most consistently satisfying albums." Jordan Mainzer of musicOMH viewed the album's aesthetic as "striking" and "noticeably starker than anything [Goldfrapp have] made before", concluding, "This is real music, about real people, dealing in real emotion. That it sounds so gorgeously lush too is mere icing on a very rich cake." Andy Gill of The Independent stated, "The delicate guitar and piano figures and the sombre languor of strings behind Alison Goldfrapp's breathy vocals create something akin to a cross between the dreamlike mythopoeism of old folk tales and the lush cinematic arrangements of Michel Legrand." Tales of Us is a good surprise for me (the album should be more higher), I always liked Goldfrapp but this album is special, Alison can show me more than ever how her voice sounds like an angel.
Genre: Dream Pop / Trip Hop / Ambient
Favorite Tracks:
1. Jo
2. Annabel
3. Clay
4. Drew |
#40. White Lies
Big TV
|
Big TV is the third studio album by the British indie rock band White Lies. It was released on 12 August 2013 through Fiction Records in the UK and Europe, and on 20 August 2013 in the US. On 18 August 2013, the album debuted at no. 4 on UK Albums Chart. In an interview with NME in January 2013, bassist Charles Cave said that the album is the band's most melodic record, but there is still a pretty definitive White Lies sound. The album follows a story of a couple who leave a provincial area for a big city and, according to Cave, the idea of equality in a relationship is a recurring theme. Big TV received generally favorable reviews from music critics. At Metacritic, which assigns a normalized rating out of 100 to reviews from mainstream critics, the album received an average score of 64, based on 18 reviews. Matt Collar of AllMusic wrote that White Lies "sound even more engaged and clear-eyed than on the ambitious, stylized Ritual," and they "combine the urgent passions of their debut with the conceptual ambitions of their sophomore effort and by doing so, make the best album of their career." Cai Trefor of Clash magazine rated the album 7/10, and described it as leaning towards retro, but also sounding firmly in the present, "utilising electronic samples with classic valve-driven guitar chords to accompany the trademark baritone of McVeigh." Matt Thomas of The Line of Best Fit accents the album's 1980s atmosphere, but "with influences visible, nods clearly marked, White Lies aren’t just repackaging yesterday’s hits as their own. Instead they’re making use of abandoned utensils to create anew, achieving catharsis through resourcefulness. Yes, they are working with a previously-explored aesthetic, but they are molding it into a beautifully-original product, per a vision that refuses to forget music’s former greatness." A little bit disappointed with this album, I was expecting more from White Lies after "Ritual" but Big TV is still amazing, to be honest the album is growing on me. White Lies is one of my favorite indie bands.
Genre: Indie Rock / Post-Punk / Alternative
Favorite Tracks:
1. Getting Even
2. There Goes Our Love Again
3. Goldmine / Mother Tongue
4. First Time Caller |
#39. Cut Copy
Free Your Mind
|
Free Your Mind is the fourth studio album by Australian electronic music band Cut Copy, released on 1 November 2013 by Modular Recordings. The album was produced by frontman Dan Whitford, with mixing and additional production by Dave Fridmann. Produced by frontman Dan Whitford, Free Your Mind was recorded in Cut Copy's hometown of Melbourne and later mixed by Dave Fridmann in Upstate New York. According to its press release, the album was inspired by the two different Summers of Love (San Francisco's in 1967 and Britain's in 1988 and 1989). "The concept of freedom is one that's universally positive and timeless, and whatever each person's version of that freedom is, it's a good thing to be reminding people or even just ourselves to be 'free'", Whitford stated. One of the biggest surprise this year for me. I used to like Cut Copy in 2008 with In Ghost Colours, but then they released Zonoscope (2011), the album not catchy me attention. I was not expecting for this, but this year Cut Copy bring back much eletronic influences for their album and they made me really happy for this because Free Your Mind is kinda similar to Ghost Colours. Free Your Mind is another album that should be higher.
Genre: Synthpop / Indietronica / House / Dance
Favorite Tracks:
1. Footsteps
2. In Memory Capsule
3. Meet Me In The House Of Love
4. We are Explorers |
#38. Armin van Buuren
Intense
|
Intense is the fifth studio album by Dutch trance producer and DJ Armin van Buuren. It was released on May 3, 2013. The first song announced to be on the album is "Waiting for the Night", featuring the singer Fiora, which was released on January 21, 2013 as the theme song to the Dutch film Loving Ibiza (Verliefd op Ibiza). Armin van Buuren described genre composition of Intense as "more house-y electro stuff and of course trance, some rock influence, even a little bit of dubstep and classical music in there" during an interview with British DJ Pete Tong. Another big surprise for me this year. I always liked some single from Armin but I was not expecting for this. I actually heard MUCH the king of trance this year. For me, Armin Van Buuren was the DJ of the year. Intense has something special and I don't know how to explain lol I love the beats, the voices, I can feel some nostalgic feelings when I hear Intense.
Genre: Trance / House Progressive / Electro
Favorite Tracks.
1. Waiting For The Night (feat. Fiora)
2. Sound of the Drums/Alone
3. This Is What It Feels Like (feat. Trevor Guthrie)
4. Forever Is Ours |
#37. Cassadee Pope
Frame By Frame
|
Frame by Frame is the debut solo studio album by American singer-songwriter Cassadee Pope, former lead vocalist of rock band Hey Monday and winner of the third season of The Voice. It was released on October 8, 2013 by Republic Nashville. The album was produced by Dann Huff with additional production from Nathan Chapman on three tracks, and Max Martin and Shellback on one. The lead single "Wasting All These Tears" was released on May 31, 2013, charting within the Top 40 of the Billboard Hot 100 and Hot Country Songs charts. Upon release, Frame by Frame debuted on the Billboard 200 at #9 in the US, and at #1 of the Top Country Albums chart. The album received mostly mixed to positive reviews, with most of the criticism targeting its pop-styled production and a lack of originality. Markso Papadatos of Digital Journal responded very positively to the album, noting that it "showcases [Pope's] powerful vocals and her superb storytelling ability." He concluded by rating Frame by Frame an A. Matt Bjorke of Roughstock gave the album four stars; he described Frame by Frame as "exactly the kind of crossover-ready record that was expected" from Pope, drawing comparisons to country-pop artists Taylor Swift and Carrie Underwood, and stated that every track had single potential. Bjorke went on to praise Pope's emotive vocal delivery and strength as a singer-songwriter. Allmusic gave the album three-out-of-five stars. Reviewer Steve Leggett commented on the diverse lyrical subject matter and noted that Pope's performances were "very good" but forgettable. The review also questioned Frame by Frame being marketed as country music: "It isn't really country, at least not in the old sense, instead being that kind of thinly veneered pop that passes for country these days." Victoria Patneaude of Alter the Press! gave the album a glowing review, noting that despite "some less-than-stellar moments", Pope successfully "found exactly where she belongs" in the music industry and delivered a strong debut. "This release is a testament to how far Cassadee has come and how far she is planning to go," Patneaude explains, "So move over, Taylor Swift, there's a new country pop princess here to take the throne." Kinda low position, I really love Cassadee (since Hey Monday) but I had no time to listen this album too. I'll give more attention for Frame By Frame next year.
Genre: Country / Pop
Favorite Tracks:
1. Wasting All These Tears
2. Proved You Wrong
3. One Song Way/This Car/Your Hear The Song
4. Champagne/11 |
#36. The Naked And Famous
In Rolling Waves
|
In Rolling Waves is the second studio album from New Zealand post-punk revival band The Naked and Famous. It was released on 13 September 2013 in New Zealand, reland and Australia, 16 September 2013 in the United Kingdom, and 17 September 2013 in Canada and the United States. On 23 July 2013, the first single from the album, "Hearts Like Ours", premiered on BBC Radio 1. The video was released on YouTube on 29 July 2013. YEEES, another amazing surprise for me this year. I loved some songs from Passive Me, Aggressive You in 2010 and I was so curious to hear what they would bring for 2013. Thank you god In Rolling Waves was much better than their debut album. Solid album and really catchy.
Genre: Indie Rock / Indie Pop / Post Punk / Synthpop
Favorite Tracks:
1. I Kill Giants
2. Hearts Like Ours/Rolling Waves
3. What We Want
4. The Mess |
Next: 35-21
Finally the update is here, sorry for delay. Guys, I really don't have time to do reviews, reviews and more reviews but I'll try to say something here. Anyway, I hope you all enjoy. Thanks you for the comments and supports.
