Shareholders only affect the present. When you get destroyed on the charts for a whole era, that leaves you as a company, running at a loss.
Even if shareholders decided to come back with Dreamcast smashing, the damage was done from the Genesis era and would have resulted badly for their next console.
Nobody smashes two eras in a row (except Nintendo

) when it comes to gaming. Sega would have never been able to smash Dreamcast and a potential future console without folding eventually because Genesis screwed them bad
