Best Of Concerts 2o13
2o13 was quite a good year for me concert-wise. It started out a bit slow, I only went to my first gig at the end of April, but I still managed to set a new record and attend 11 concerts this year. As some of you know, I moved to London (UK) at the end of September, so that gave my schedule quite a boost, and if I had moved earlier I am sure I would have reached my goal of 12 concerts, one per month (statistically speaking). But I am optimistic I will be able to achieve that in 2o14, as I plan to stay in London permanently and thus already have seven concerts on my list.
Going to 11 concerts did not only mean quite a variety of artists and types of performances, as you will see, but also an interesting range of venues and actual places I went, so let’s have a quick overview of those:
4 countries:
Germany
The Netherlands
Luxembourg (4 concerts)
United Kingdom (5 concerts) | 5 cities:
Berlin
Amsterdam
Luxembourg
Esch-sur-Alzette (3 concerts)
London (5 concerts) | 9 venues:
Bi Nuu, Berlin
Den Atelier, Luxembourg
Melkweg, Amsterdam
Koko, London
Shepherds Bush Empire, London
O2 Academy Brixton, London
The Roundhouse, London
O2 Academy Islington, London
Rockhal, Esch-sur-Alzette (3 times) |
Isn’t it kinda funny that I only went to one concert in the country I’m actually from?
Anyway, regarding the venues, I’d just like to say that those in the UK are my favorites. They have quite a lot of venues that used to be theatres or cinemas and therefore have beautiful interior with very high ceilings, plastering, ornaments, columns and arches, chandeliers and so on. Most bigger venues also have one or more balconies, which is great if you just want to sit and enjoy the show from a good view. So that’s what I really love about the UK, there’s a special feel to these venues that make every concert an even greater experience.
But enough small talk, let’s get started! I said I’m doing a top 5, so that makes 6 concerts that did not make the list. Let’s have a look at them first.
Who did not make the list? – Part I
Charli XCX – Nov 30, O2 Academy Islington, London
This was a great gig, very intimate due to the small size of the venue and Charli delivered a great performance. Backed by an all-female band (girl power!), her songs sounded better live than I would have expected – I always imagine it to be difficult for an artist from the electronic field to recreate the album sound on stage, but it worked out really well for Charli and it was an enjoyable evening. She played almost every song from her album as well as the new single, I Love It and a cover, and I barely stopped dancing that night.
AlunaGeorge – Oct 22, Shepherds Bush Empire, London
My first concert after moving to London, and I was so stoked to see AG live. Similarly to Charli XCX, I was curious how they would manage to present their electronic sound live, but there were no problems at all. Aluna’s voice sounded just as smooth and inviting as on the album, and the beats made me want to dance more than ever. So the music was great, but it felt like there was something lacking, since AG did not have a lot of stage presence and the set also seemed a bit short with them finishing in just under an hour. Nevertheless, it was worth going.
Ke$ha – July 10, Den Atelier, Luxembourg
Ke$ha did not play any concerts in Germany this year, so I found it quite surprising that she went to Luxembourg out of all places, and such a small venue too, although I guess it makes sense considering the success of Warrior. I’m not a K$ stan but I was curious about her show and she is one of the pop girls after all, so I decided to go and it was an interesting night. She had two dancers with her and there was lots of confetti, glitter and inappropriate behaviour on stage. She also looked quite fantastic, surprising the audience with quite some creative outfits, but in the end, it all seemed a bit lame and almost cheap. Nevertheless, it was entertaining and I guess that is the purpose of a pop concert.
TBC…

Well I wouldn't really bother going to their concerts so I guess it's not bad that they didn't make it. Ke$ha went here earlier this year but there wasn't a lot of buzz about it so I don't regret skipping it.
It's so awesome that you've moved to London though and watch a lot of concerts there. I've always wanted to go to Europe

Charli XCX & AlunaGeorge. Wish they would come to my flop country - Argentina.
The only concerts I got to see this year were M.I.A., Solange and The XX. They slayed my soul so ****ing much tho.
Honestly, TRF.

11 concerts this year? I only went to one. It was Ke$ha, and I had the time of my life. She had all of her dancers with her on stage the entire time though, so I'm wondering if it was a smaller stage when you had seen her?
I would LOVE to see AlunaGeorge live. I'm not surprised about them not having much stage presence though... hopefully they improve that in their next tour / era.

Yeah, I mean I still enjoyed those concerts but they were just a nice time whereas to the ones in my top five, they were really something special. I guess it wasn't the best year for Ke$ha, but I have to say, she is a good performer live.
I still can't believe it sometimes, I'm only supposed to stay here for six months but I like it so much here that I think I will just move permanently and not go back home (if everything works out). You'd love it here, it's such an amazing city, full of life and energy and the concerts are incredible.

I'm so glad to hear you enjoyed her concert! Yes, it was quite a small stage and venue where I saw her, so apart from her band there was only room for two dancers They still put on a nice show though.
I agree, and I'm not too bothered by it because they are still new and this was already quite a big venue for them to play. I guess they are more used to clubs and stuff. Hopefully they'll be able to improve over time.

Best Of Concerts 2o13
Who did not make the list? – Part II
Paramore – June 13, Rockhal, Esch-sur-Alzette
I'm not a huge Paramore fan, but I liked their self-titled and used to love Riot! so I thought I should go see them when they came near me. And they put on a great show, Hayley's voice is really good live, especially considering she moves around the stage the whole time and never even stands still. It made for a very energetic set, matching the pop-punk vibe of their songs, but there were also some calmer moments when they did songs like The Only Exception which was also very nice. They're definitely worth seeing.
Pierce The Veil – May 17, Koko, London
This was my fifth time seeing them, but it was a bit different because it was their biggest headline show outside of the US to that date, so it was quite a big deal. The venue was packed and it made me really happy to see how big they have actually become over here. The reason why it didn't made the list was simply because some of the circumstances of the concert kept me from fully enjoying the concert, and I already wasn't stanning as much as I used to so that also put a damper on it. It was still a great show though, because they gave everything as always, even Jaime who had a broken foot.
Bring Me The Horizon – May 09, Melkweg, Amsterdam
My second time seeing them and also my favorite. I was so completely into this concert, I was on the balcony with my friends but I was absolutely losing it, screaming every word up there and jumping and headbanging like crazy. I had no voice the next day. On the way out, I almost got crushed because there was only one exit and panic broke out as people were trying to get out. So it was a pretty intense experience altogether and one I'll remember for a long time (also because we had an amazing lunch at the Hard Rock Café beforehand).
So, those were the ones who didn't make it - but who is actually in the list? Come back tonight to find out!

You're so lucky you got to attend so many concerts this year. It gives you a different perspective to appreciate the artists when you seem playing live.
