Some White gays have the idea that "gay is the new Black": that the oppression of gays has replaced the now non-existent oppression of people of color. The truth is that both forms of oppression have always existed and both are still HUGE problems.
What everyone should understand is that you cannot and will not ever fully understand an experience that is not your own, and therefore have no right to speak on that experience. You won't catch me telling some LGBT person to stop complaining about homophobia (or telling a woman not to complain about sexism), which is why I hate to be told not to speak about racism.
The reason some White gays are so surprisingly insensitive is because they do not know what it's like to suffer racism; they only know about homophobia, which is similar, yet still an entirely different beast than racism.
I think both nonblack LGBT and straight blacks need to understand that both groups still face discrimination.
To be, blunt,I don't think we'll EVER get rid of discrimination but putting each other's struggle down as mot important is NOT how we'll achieve diversity. While it is OK to say your movement PARALLELS something, It is NOT OK to judge the movements as if they are in a contest.
