Billboard's official policy is to not count video streams of parodies, covers, etc unless the parody uses "authorized audio."

"Authorized" generally just means that they give credit (down there where it says you can buy the song right under the views) and YouTube doesn't remove it for some reason. At this point, it's probably going to be counted.

I'm quite sure "authorized" is a legal term when used in this context. The record label has to give the video owner its direct permission to use the audio.

Maybe they will authorize it, but I don't think they have yet because there's not even a link to buy the song, or Bangerz, on iTunes.

I'm thinking it's this Wrecking Ball thing that made them say "Probably" when in referenced to The Monster next week. So is it plausible they don't know if they were going to count or did they say that in case this viral video blew up. I can see the press release next week already..

The Monster was all set to be #1 till the viral sensation Wrecking Ball kept The Monster at #2 despite a certain percent gain by The Monster.

The press release will be a mess. Wasn't this viral video at around 4 million when this weeks Hot 100 was announced?

Also, even if they do count all the streams from the parody video, will that be enough to offset The Monster's lead in sales/radio/etc? The outcome depends, of course, on how much weight is given to a Youtube stream vs. a radio spin vs. a digital download.

I'd bet Billboard would get a huge amount of criticism not only from Em/Rihanna fans, but also from Interscope. There'll be lots of pressure for them to change that rule.

Well for easier estimating just assume that 1M streams are equals to 26,7K sales.
Basically if WB will get additional 6M streams from parody video that equals as if got additional 160K in sales.
And judging from views increase WB can get much more than 6M US streams till week end.

Meltdown is not going to pressure Billboard to change the formula This is not the first time that huge songs are blocked by unforseeable circumstances. Controversies will in fact be a good thing for Billboard, as a boring chart release will not get more people to read the article.

AND Wrecking Ball is going to get counted towards Billboard. I don't think there is a way for them to check whether the song used is legal or not, especially during the harlem shake fiasco.

It will get people to read the article, but Billboard would probably lose some credibility amongst record labels.

I agree fans meltdowns will of course have no effect.

What I meant to say is that pressure from record labels and others in the music industry would probably get them to change the formula.
