As much as people don't want to see it, a hit song is better promo than 5 live performances.
If you have a hit song, it will be played at sporting events, in grocery stores, in boutiques, in pharmacies, on the radio when you're driving somewhere, in soundtracks, commercials, at parties, at your friend's house, etc. etc. If you are promoting a song (let's say, Run the World) over and over and clearly not many people are identifying it, how is that selling your album?
At the end of the day these albums sold what they sold. Doing promo could be compared to preparing for a race. You do as much of it as you can for success. But your success isn't viewed based on the amount of practice, just if you succeeded or not.
