Did some calculating and even if 1D sells 400k this week (I am thinking they will do 350k) there is no way for them to go #1 without a video.

The US charts are dumb as **** having all these different factors affecting the charts. It should really just be sales.

It's a legacy thing. The Hot 100 has a history as the worlds premiere chart and for a while it was based almost entirely on airplay because single sales had died and digital didn't exist yet.

They are caught between maintaining their legacy and keeping up with the times.



Who knows? 10 years from now sales could have died and we will have all switched over to streaming.

I was shopping with my sister and we saw a 1D bag and she said to me "I think I have a new favourite..." and pointed and Legend N. I was like yas, my influence and power.

She told me she doesn't like Liam anymore because he's being a bit of a dick now and she thinks Harry and Louis are weird. I'll take from the no-comment on Zayn he's her second favourite which I approve of.

Why? Streaming makes money as well.

What if streaming keeps growing? Then they look stupid for basing it on irrelevant sales.

I just realised how sneaky the whole preorder song business is at the moment.

I was about to say the UK charts are a bit of a mess right now due to their ban on preorder tracks but now I see why, it's such a clever way to increase song sales. I still don't quite understand how it works but from my own understanding it's sneaky.

I am fine with it. The sales from pre-orders are not increasing first week sales for singles all that much (50-100k for 1D at most)..... and non singles still aren't getting enough to get top 10 based on their pre-order sales.

My guess is we don't see any rule change until a non-single debuts in the top 5 based on pre-orders without radio support or a video.

I just think streaming is irrelevant. It doesn't matter for me since nothing I stream on YouTube or Spotify makes impact on the Hot 100 since I'm not in the US, but I personally think it's a non important factor. Music should be about the sales, nothing else.

EDIT: And they don't look stupid. They only look stupid because they've based it off all the other tid-bits for years now. In the UK, radio and airplay is crucial to a song doing well, it won't to do well on the charts without it. But it doesn't actually affect the chart, it's all sales.

And honestly sales only go so far in this day and age where the economy dictates the incomes of the common denominator. Streams do help for obvious reasons where Spotify/Youtube/VEVO exists when sales alone can suffer to variety of reasons.

I meant that they will look stupid if sales decline and are replaced by streaming.

I agree on airplay. It is foolish and shouldn't be included in the formula. I am fine with streaming though because I think it is the future.

Reason on this? I'm assuming how it factors/affects which artists gets the higher charting positions in addition to sales/streaming?

1. Airplay doesn't make artists any money.

2. The fact that radio deals are allowed. So you can pay for chart positions ala Justin Timberlake.
