When an artist releases a promotional single, everyone who has pre-ordered the album automatically gets the promotional single as a download. That's why you see these promotional singles gain large numbers; all of a sudden, many thousands of people are getting their automatic downloads.
It's also why you see dark red updates after (usually) half a day. The influx of purchases almost completely dry up and thus, the other songs on the chart who are being purchased at a constant rate start closing the daily sale gap.
