This morning this old lady was singing on the subway. And she was like, "I'm gonna do one of my favorite Mariah songs." And I got real excited, thinking she may do "Emotions" or AYNAF or "I Wish You Well." And then she started singing "Greatest Love of All" Flop stan
Mariah's charting in U.S. from '00-'05 is so weird.
She started flopping Glitter/Charmbracelet because of no Airplay even tho her sales were good, then she came back during TEOM because Airplay even though she was flopping Sales wise.
It's Like That was #14 on Hot 100 Airplay, and #54 on Hot Digital Tracks when it was #16 on Hot 100. Thankfully the digital era was JUST taking off or else she wouldn't have had ha comeback, cus chile We Belong Together never even hit #1 on Digital Sales despite being #1 on Airplay for so many weeks and breaking records.
Mariah flopped from 2001-2004 because she was a huge CD single artist. A lot of her late 90s hits (Honey, Heartbreaker, My All, I Still Believe, etc.) did only decently on radio, but went #1 because of CD single sales. And we all know what happened with Loverboy.
But then in 2002 CD singles became phased out and by 2003 they were all but dead. Digital downloads were non-existent back then. Mariah's singles all flopped on the radio and had no sales to help them chart higher.
In 2005 digital downloads were just beginning. The TEOM singles didn't sell a lot digitally because everyone went out and bought the actual album instead. There are some users on this site that say WBT is a "flop" because it's only Platinum, but a 6x Platinum album > a 6x Platinum single.
Honey you stay saying everything I say exactly about charts, but then say it 15 minutes later than me.

But to answer the question it was a smash for her - first Top 20 in 4 years. Top 20 is a smash in U.S., if you don't live here.
It also was the key to her breakthrough success for the rest of the era as it went #14 on Airplay, her best Airplay for a single since Heartbreaker - at a time where for the past 5 years her highest peak on Airplay was #50 (Loverboy).
Airplay is what really ruined her career 2001-2004 so the fact the song got her back on the radios makes it a success in her book, and it also lead to one of the Biggest U.S. Airplay Songs of All-Time : We Belong Together.
It was also kinda lucky to peak at #16 considering it was #14 on Hot 100 Airplay, #18 on Hot Single Sales (Physical Sales) and #54 on Hot Digital Tracks.

At the time, Mariah hadn't had a hit in years and wasn't that well-liked by the public. It's like That was her reintroduction to radio.
I remember watching a video of a radio DJ talking about the song and he said that there were people that called and told him to "stop playing wh0re music".

Yeah, these interviews are making me kind of nervous. This song is "for her fans" and she is acting reserved, as was noted, and Jermaine Dupri is sitting next to her... I'm scared y'all!
Then again, I love Triumphant so I guess I'm easily pleased anyway and will appreciate anything MC throws my way

I don't think there's nothing to be scared of just yet. Those were just really short interviews in order to simply make people aware of the upcoming release. And those subjects were really dull, too. I mean, how much is there to say about a stream on Facebook?
