In previous games it was a held item for one Pokemon, so for instance I give my Rattata the exp share and then my Squirtle defeats the wild Pidgey. Half the exp from the battle will go to Rattata and half to Squirtle.
In this, it's a key item that you activate, so when Squirtle defeats Pidgey, all 6 Pokemon on my team get a little bit of exp. Do loads of battles and eventually they start levelling up really quickly.
