Exactly. I would consider indie/alternative music with a familiar melody generic, like Lorde's "Royals." I swear I've heard that song a million times before, back when alternative was super popular in the 90s.
It's nowhere near the first in the genre, but it's not something we've been hearing over and over again and I can guarantee we'll have tons of South Korean sound-a-likes in a month or two. Heck, we already have Paris Hilton's "Good Time," which is literally an example of how to commercialize "Work Bitch" and make it viable as a pop song.

There's basically nothing "new" or "special" abour 'Royals' - Like you said, there just wasn't anything like it in the last 3 to 5 years.
