Not sure if I should update with the 4

I'm due for an upgrade, but I don't want to get the 5 now just to have the 5s released 2 months later in Mexico.

For future references how do you back up your iPhone?

I had iOS 7 GM on my iPhone 4 and it told me that you need 11.1 to manage it, so I assume you need it to update the phone too?

Anyway, it's available for download on apple.com.

Plug your phone into Mac/PC -> click "*name*'s iPhone -> Back up and choose where you want it to be stored. I made a backup on the computer I'm using

Nothing. One just doesn't require you to hook your phone up to the computer.

If you have wifi, you can do it over the air (OTA) through settings. No connection to the computer required.
