She didn't perform "Womanizer", the single wasn't even released at that time. She just oponed the show with a sketch and later a brief welcome speech to the audience, she later became the big winner of the night and the fact played a huge part in her comeback.
Britney is easily the artist with the most iconic performances in VMAs history, Madonna could be the top winner but as far I remember she has 3 iconic VMAs performances while Britney has 4 iconic VMAs performances (more than any other artist), her performances were genuinly iconic and generated genuine attention, while Gaga's few moments seemed heavily prepared and forced the attention.
Britney is also the first artist of her generation to be recipient of the Vanguard award and only the 3rd female artist in VMAs history who received it.
She shares with Madonna which could be considered the most memorable moment in VMAs history, the Madonna-Britney kiss
