The iPhone 5 has midrange specs. And since both work with the same manufacturers, they pay the same price for the same hardware, so Apples sells something equivalent to a mid-range but with a higher price.

People are still in this mindset that having an iPhone is the coolest thing ever. Where I work, the only customers that still have iPhones are parents, old people, and girls younger than 14. Everyone else has an S3 or S4 tbh.

Well they're priced the same in the US (where Samsung is trying to do better in). Those "mid range" specs got them No. 1 in Samsung's own home turf where Samsung's usually worshipped, South Korea, so. Even the spec-obsessed don't call it a mid range phone so idk where you got that from. Maybe Nokia fans do that.

It's not that they're cool. It's because it's smoother than any Samsung phone. I agree that it's overpriced (well when you buy it off-contract) but sometimes the experience is better than features. I have an iPhone and because I had no choice when I was browsing the phone choices at my network. I hated it at first and wanted the Lumia 920 but as time passed I LOVE it. It's so smooth. I have friends with S4s and S3s complaining about the lag that comes with their phones. Yep, they show me the awesome features of the phone but nothing beats Apple when it comes to the smoothness of the OS. The battery life is decent and gets me through the day and still have 30% even when 3G is on. I last a full day with wi-fi only and I have remaining 50-60% on my battery life. It's insane. Not better than my Blackberry but I expected the worst. I do a little games, whatsapp, text messaging, calls, browse the net and listen to music for 5-6 hours.

I know everybody has their stories but mine is great. I really want to switch to Windows Phone though. Maybe this November and I'll get an iPad. I was once an Apple hater (still occasionally with their pricing) but seriously getting myself an iPhone was probably one of the best decisions I made with technology and I am surprised.

I'm trying to figure out your point. I can go on a tangent like you and say the same thing with anecdotes. In my college all I see is students using iPhones, the population is of course late teens to early 20s. Or I can say that since I live in NYC the most common phone is iPhones. So now can I say iPhones are more popular with no statistics or numbers to back it up like you?

In the US atleast iPhones are more popular than Samsung, they also have the highest satisfaction rating according to J&D.

Apple makes more profit because the components are cheaper. Ever wonder why the Nokia Lumia 925 launched at ~$500? Because it has specs of a high mid-range android (and they retail at a similar price).
Sony Xperia SP has specs similar (if not identical on paper) and yet it's considered [higher] mid-range.
