I would say our generation's defining artist would have to be someone who can survive without the dying platform of Top 40 radio, so that rules out Rih and Katy
Rihanna is the KING of streaming though, audio on services like Spotify, Pandora, etc. and video on YouTube/VEVO. So looks like she's still winning.
Its an observation I made. Think about every artist that defined a generation, they weren't usually liked by the previous generation (Nirvana, Elvis, etc). And they were liked by both sexes, (MJ's and The Beatles music is universal).
MJ definitely wasn't hated by the previous generation, though.

When he did disco I would say so, seeing as that was the more youthful genre, and it got a huge backlash much later. But he is of the more universal figure I put him in.
Elvis defined the 50s, The Beatles defined the 60s, & Michael defined the 80s because they were the dominant stars of their time. We didn't have one dominant star that defined the entire decade for the 70s, 90s, 00s, or 10s. If I had to do a popgirl assessment, than I guess Madonna defined the 80s, Mariah/Whitney/Celine defined the 90s, Britney defined early 00s, Rihanna defined late 00s, and it's likely Gaga for the 10s.
What about the 2000s? Its been nearly 13 years since it started.
Britney Was The Defining Figure From 2000 - 2009.Nirvana Wasn't The Defining Figure of The 1990's.Considering That By The End Of The 1990's Pop Had Taken Over Because Of The Spice Girls

Lol at you naming the top artist of each decade, then stopping at 90's when it's Mariah's turn.

I agree. But I think we have three or more dominants acts for those decades.
