I'm not coming for Hung Up as a global hit, but to say it's forgotten or borderline unknown in the US outside of the internet stan world would not be much of a stretch.
And the US is the third most-populated country in the world and the single most significant purveyor/consumer of pop culture. I'm not really interested in overstating its importance (I drag girls for being local to the US all the time - and I'd probably take being known throughout the variety of cultures in Europe than just America), but it's silly to over-compensate in the other direction and downplay it either.
Countries like China and India are obviously much more insular in this regard with their own strongly developed cultures that are relatively detached from the rest of the world once you go outside their respective regions.
