I wouldn't even call RCA messy but the way they handle Kelly shows that they don't have a ton of faith in her. After all, it's a business at the end of the day, they want to make money. Kelly is in the middle of their mainstream artists food chain. She is more important to them than Ke$ha & Christina but less important than P!nk & Justin Timberlake. They have shown that they are quite capable of managing an era.
For example, lets look at P!nk:
#1)
Blow Me: Very radio-friendly, had promo at the right time, and became a Top 5 hit and was huge on radio.
#2)
Try: more WW focused and had 1 high profile performance in the U.S after it was released. Went Top 10 and sold the album well.
#3)
Just Give Me a Reason: The obvious hit of the album, didn't need promo because the momentum was already there.
Now, Kelly:
#1)
Mr. Know It All: Catchy but not too radio-friendly, had promo but without major Pop radio support, it could only do so much.
#2)
What Doesn't Kill You: Obvious hit from the album, had 0 promo outside of a commercial and a performance months before being released as a singe. Went #1.
#3)
Dark Side: 0 promo outside of a performance before being released as a single.
They also handled JT's comeback very well. He had obvious payola and smashed.
They know what they're doing for the most part when they actually care to do so. Some of it does have to do with Kelly because she doesn't care about anything besides for touring but RCA could've definitely done better.
