You know what a HIT SONG is? A song that does WELL. That's the only defintion of a hit song.
You're confusing a hit song with a MEMORABLE song and CLASSIC song.
There's two things wrong with this.
1. There's so many classic and memorable songs that didn't even go Top 50 on the Hot 100, and yet recurrent airplay has it kept it alive and it's still memorable. An example would me Murder She Wrote. That's the defintion of an Urban classic and that **** didn't even chart in the US.
2. A HIT song is a song that is successful. That's the ONLY definition and you could ask anyone and they would say that. I can name a few hit generic songs from the last five years that NOBODY remembers because they were only produced to be relevant in that moment.
3. A classic song and a memorable song are two different things. Remember that.
