Teen Mom is one show I could never get into despite everyone talking about it and all the headlines it's made. I think I've seen maybe 2 episodes and this girl's mom was trying to get custody of her baby because the girl was like always going out partying and smoking or something. I remember watching her call her mom all those names and thinking wow I would be in a ****ing wheelchair right now if that were me.

What do y'all think about "slave names" and whatnot; how some Black people replace their European birthnames with African ones? (Ex. Erica ----> Ery-kah)

I think the concept of 'slave names' is kinda dumb. The name was not given to you by a slave master, but by your mother or by your father(?). They didn't give you that name due to centuries of brainwashing and oppression. They probably found it in a baby book or heard it somewhere and thought it was pretty.

Some African-Americans try SO hard to immerse themselves in African culture and I just don't get it. We were not born in Africa. We are not Africans. We are African-Americans. They are two different things. We resulted from the slave trade and the British colonial and American experiences and we have a (mixed-breed) culture that has developed from it. English language, English religion and English names are a part of our culture. What is the point in going and getting a name from a land that you've never step foot in?
