I think the only alternative lead single would have been TEOG. That would have made a (positive) difference.
However, I feel it would have been a mistake to lead with that and follow with BTW because of the inevitable negativity it'd bring. Especially around album release.
Better for BTW to go first to bring the hype and get the backlash out of the way, then follow it up with the crowd pleaser TEOG to damage control around the album release. After that is anyone's guess. You & I probably should have been a double single with Schiesse, using the VMAs to push them. Fourth single could have been Hair, fifth Marry The Night.
I have a funny feeling HML could have surprised us because from my experience, casuals love it, but you never know.
