She doesn't agree to that line as well, that's why she says 'that's what tradition told you' ..
I think it's a good line because it portrays the orthodox way of thinking of some people.
She also makes reference to the tradition of going to church every Sunday, while the
people she knows do marijuana, her father cheats on her mother etc .. They all
follow those 'good rules of life' or 'prayers' or 'words of God', but they still do
those bad things .. This song is a way of saying how people believe blindly
in religion and refusing to see its flaws.
I love the chorus.
Mama's hooked on Mary Kay.
Brother's hooked on Mary Jane.
Daddy's hooked on Mary two doors down.
Mary, Mary quite contrary.
We get bored, so, we get married
Just like dust, we settle in this town.
On this broken merry go 'round and 'round and 'round we go
Where it stops nobody knows and it ain't slowin' down.
This merry go 'round.
Sypnosis:
Mary Kay = fashion
Mary Jane = marijuana
Daddy's Mary = he's cheating on her mother with some woman named Mary
And still among these 'sins', they still live that way (
just like dust we settle in this town),
believing in God and sinning at the same time,
hence the merry go round, merry go round part - it keeps going on, it never stops.
And I believe the
Mary Mary quite contrary, we got bored so we got married part is
her referring the acceptance of religion - Virgin Mary. Marrying (Getting into) religion.
