In the end, neither Grammys nor #1 singles really matter all that much, but the artist with 18 Grammys is more likely to be remembered in the long run.
I mean, pop success usually doesn't last. It takes a lot for a pop song to endure several years after its run, and 90% of the time it'll just vanish right into the ether, never to be seen again.
Look at an edition of the Billboard Hot 100 from, say, the 70s and I guarantee you'll see a TON of artists you've never heard of. Hell, look back less than a decade and you'll probably find a load of songs that nobody checks for anymore. I mean... Do I Make You Proud? Laffy Taffy? Shake Ya Tailfeather? A Moment Like This? Does ANYONE remember those songs?
