They werent nominated, it would have been really awkward if they were just there just for a performance especially since the target audience for The Grammys does not coincide with theirs as much as say the VMAs

It's all about promo. It would have gotten The Grammy's more views, etc. JT performed but wasn't nominated. It would have been smart marketing on both sides IMO
