Please.

Why does it have to be about him being white? Beyoncé is black and she gets massive urban and pop radio play whenever she ***** in a box. Why not be happy that a massive artist like JT has the power to influence radio and potentially make R&B mainstream again? It will make way for acts like Frank and The Weeknd (who are both geniuses as well) to get the mainstream success they deserve. So don't even go there.

Well the quote is based off ONE assistant Program Director but she's not lying.... It should have been Usher leading the pack but instead he went the generic pop girl route with the OMG's and what not.
Usher & Justin are the biggest faces of Male pop with R&B influences.

I think timing has a lot to do with the success of this as well, people are overlooking that. People are getting tired of all the dance songs, which is why artists like Bruno, The Lumineers and so on are finding amazing success. People want something different and Justin served this up at the right time. I do agree about miguel (such a good album) frank, mehh the weeknd lol though even though I think frank and the weeknd are a different kind of R&B

Sorry, I prefer if artists who are actually R&B through and through brought the genre back to the mainstream with something more inventive & better than S&T.

Pop radio ignored "Climax," and that's why trash like "Scream" was promoted there instead.

Pop ignored Bey last era. Also the point is there is soo many good RnB songs out there, but they were ignored, then Justin comes out with a not so good RnB song and they are jumping on it like it's all fresh lmao.

I agree with most of the article. It's a really good song. The production is amazing and it's interesting for a comeback single.
However, I'm already over people acting like this is some new revolutionary sound and the people saying Justin is changing pop or changing/bringin R&B back . People have been doing this sound for years. The only reason it was never embraced by radio is because it wasn't Justin Timberlake...or his comeback single. If any other artist released this same type of song it wouldn't get half of the acceptance or praise, let's be real.

I want someone to explain to me why it's not a good song, "It sounds like robin thicke" isnt a good answer because you're basically saying robin thicke isnt good. Like i was saying yesterday it's ok to not like a song but that doesnt mean its not a good song. I didnt like les mis that doesnt mean it wasnt a good movie though.

This is probably the same way people felt when everyone though dubstep and 'EDM' was a new thing when it's actually been around since the 70s 80s and 90s.

Not you making it about race though, when artists like Beyoncé and Usher get massive airplay as well. And who exactly are these "R&B through and through" artists that should be the ones bringing R&B back to the mainstream then? Please enlighten us. Because neither of the aforementioned artists are "R&B through and through" either.
The reality is that you need an artist with some kind of crossover appeal to capture the attention of the pop crowd (and fans of other genres). Justin has had success in the pop and the R&B space, which is why S&T is so hyped, despite it not being anywhere near a pop track.

When has Beyoncé and Usher received "massive airplay" for R&B tracks in recent history, darling?
ALL of those artists are R&B through and through, and don't sit up here and tell me (someone who is a dedicated listener of R&B music) that they are not when you are sitting here with those artists in your siggy.
I'm sorry, but I just prefer if R&B artists who have tried to do something different with the genre bought mainstream significance to it, not Justin with this track, which has been done over and over and over again. It's nothing more inventive than the stuff that's already being played on Urban AC radio. That's MY opinion. Good for Justin if he "brings the genre back to the mainstream," but I'm not here for this track.
And just because Justin hits it big with "S&T" doesn't mean anything for the future of R&B on mainstream radio. This just would bode well for his success.

Who are you to say it's not a good R&B song though? You don't get to decide what other people like. Of course there are tons of great R&B songs out there. So basically y'all are mad because Justin is getting attention with his "basic" R&B throwback but your "more innovative" faves are getting paid dust.
The SAME thing happened with EDM fans when David Guetta and Calvin Harris started getting attention with their "basic" dance tracks. The SAME thing happened with dubstep fans when Skrillex started getting attention with his "basic" brostep tracks. And look what happened. It made way for EDM and dubstep to get into the mainstream. Now more innovative artists like Zedd and Madeon are working with Gaga. You guys are seriously doing the most.

I don't remember anyone claiming it was a revolutionary new sound tho. Why is it a problem that it's popular because it's Justin Timberlake? EDM became popular because of David Guetta. Dubstep became popular because of Skrillex. I'm still not seeing the issue here.

ALL of those artists have released POP singles multiple times in their career, so no, they are not "R&B through and through". They all have massive crossover appeal. Don't try it. You don't know anything about my tastes. Just because I stan for certain artists doesn't mean I don't enjoy a dearth of R&B Soul artists. I love me some Charlie Wilson, Marvin Gaye, Sam Cooke, R Kelly, Aretha as much as you do so don't even go there.

Are you saying Beyonce and Usher have no crossover appeal?
The point is that pop radio has barely embraced R&B music in the recent years, even by artists with cross over appeal. They have basically had to release extremely poppy/dancey songs in order to get spins on pop radio. The ONLY reason this song is being so heavily embraced by pop radio now is because it's Justin Timberlake and it's his comeback single. Period. And yes him being white definitely is a factor. If Usher (who pop radio heavily supports) or anyone else released this exact same R&B/Jazz track, it would hardly get the same amount of support on the format. Nevermind the fact that similar song have previously been released before and never saw the light of day on pop.

And don't forget that everybody HATED Sexyback when it came out. The GP was NOT here for it at all, but look how things ended up.
|
isn't it obvious? this is ATRL. look at the artists they stan for. it's a no-brainer. if this works for JT, the shift has begun which means the days of fluffy pop songs hogging the charts are truncated. I live

I love S&T but I have to agree. It sucks that great R&B couldn't/can't get play on pop radio. And I'm not talking the Jazmine Sullivan's of the world (though it be nice) but mainstream artists like Usher & Beyonce. When two artists that were mainstays on pop radio in the previous decade can't get their R&B songs played, it makes you think "WHAT THE F*** IS GOING ON?!".
Hate making things about race but let's call it what it is.
But you know what, if S&T brings on a change in trend on pop radio, then I'm all for it's success.

It's great! Justin's back with Tim, Beyonce's back, Britney's back with Danja and Hit-Boy, Miley's working with Pharrell and Da Internz, Selena wants to go more urban radio's gonna be a lot less "poppy" this year!! Even Lady Gaga's stuff with Madeon and Zedd will be great because it wont be the typical guetta/redone/luke dance stuff.

No amount of hype and positive reviews will make me like it.
However, I wish Justin well and I will be checking for his album in hopes that he has something better to offer. I'm here for R&B, but I need something stronger than this. Suit & Tie is weaksauce.
