Telephone came out a little scatterbrained, definitely. But Alejandro got to being completely disorganized. And by the time she got to MTN, which she did herself, the cinematography was rather... Schizophrenic in nature, for lack of better term.

Yeah basically though even with a professional director you can go wrong. I think she needs to find a medium between complex themes and normal cinematography. There should also always be short versions of long videos.

Length isn't an issue if you can build the interest for the entire viewing. Paparazzi, Telephone, Alejandro, and even BTW are all proof of that.

If it's disoriented and confusing, the length becomes an issue.

Y&I went double platinum and Top 10 in the US, that was hardly the issue in the era.

MTN had platforms like the EMAs and NYE to propel off of, and still couldn't. The issue was the overexposure and radio rejection etc by that point. Way too much coming at her, even with all of the global promo she couldn't fight off the media fatigue/backlash.

She doesn't have too much control when it comes to what actually is a single or what isn't. At one point MTN would have been lead single. But they chose BTW since it made most sense.

Tbf, she did get the older crowd with that song. My parents really liked it, and in the US it did well cos older people are more likely to buy music.

It shouldve been BTW -> MTN -> TEOG -> Y&I /end era.

TEOG/Y&I helped build her up on HAC/AC and shouldve been released

Twang & I killed the already sluggish momentum of the era after it had already been dragged down by a lead single that lacked longevity, followed by a dismal radio flop.

Top 40 was not going to help her anymore after that abandonment (didn't fit the musical landscape at all), and the international audiences weren't checking for her singles after that either. So nothing was going to be a success.

Except for maybe Hair. It's melodic enough that it didn't need to coast by solely on her name alone.

The era wouldve been looked at differently without the TEOG video. Judas, even with the chart hit, picked up a lot of interest with the video.

TEOG undercut that single, made the era shorter than it shouldve, etc.

Not gonna lie, I was happy MTN flopped when I found out it would be the end of the era. If it went Top 10, she wouldve kept going and it just wasn't doing her any favors at that point.
She got the 7m copies sold, time to move on and stop with the diminished momentum.

Look at her tweets from a year ago. 90% of them are about MTN and how excited she was over the song, performances and video. It's so depressing looking at them since she had such high hopes.

She wanted MTN to be lead until she wrote BTW, then she wanted MTN to be second and then for the longest time she wanted MTN to be the third single.

Y&I was fine and not a mess. Releasing 5 singles in a 9 month period was a mess. She/Interscope should've not released the 2nd single until 2 weeks prior to BTW(album) as BTW(single) was still big on the radio when Judas released. They also tried pre-emptively to kill TEOG when it was still going strong in August so that she could promo Y&I for the VMAs. BTW and TEOG had a lot more longevity but Interscope killed both of them prematurely which also hindered Judas/Y&I.
