i don't know why people say Merry Christmas in the 24 tho I thought 25 Dec is the Christmas Day and the night of 24 is the Christmas Eve?

In some countries christmas begins on 24th e.g. in Poland.
On 24th we eat a Christmas dinner. Our tradition says that on the table, there have to be 12 dishes with different types of food. Like dumplings, cabbage with peas and mushrooms, fishes, red borscht etc.
