this isn't something to joke about, this is the saddest thing i have heard in the news well since the last shooting, it's unfair 100% unfair to the poor children. things need to change, we've been saying never again after every single one of these massacres but they just keep happening.

I hate how the media is sensationalizing this killer, just like with James Holmes. This is how you will get more potential shootings because these killers are getting media attention, They are all over TMZ, they are trending on Twitter ect. You will have more crazy people being influenced by this and do the same ****. Sensationalism is also a big problem. I don't need to know about his background.I don't care if he was troubled or has mental issues. That doesn't excuse the fact that he killed 20 kids and 6 adults.

I might get a wp for this but seeing those poor children's pictures,I'm kind of glad the assailant killed himself.Something as SHAMEFUL as this doesn't deserve a measley life sentence,these kids had DECADES ahead of them that they couldn't even live to see because someone wanted to become trigger happy trying to "send the world a message".If it were up to me,the trash that shot up that school would have gotten the DEATH PENALTY by guillotine.

So the shooter is apparantly a man with Aspergers Syndrome? Do you realize how ****ing embarassing that makes me feel? I also have Aspergers but I would NEVER go into a school, or anywhere for that matter, and just shoot at innocent people.

They should have left the Asperger part out because that's making it seem like every Asperger person is a horrible person when that's not true.

It puts into perspective the mental health issue that we are currently facing, but this time its from a mother's perspective. I applaud this mother for writing it.

exactly. people want to point the finger at guns but this problem is much more than that. yes, easy access to heavy artillery/ assault weapons is a problem but so is the sensationalist media because it celebrates these assailants and encourages other unstable people to commit copycat atrocities. we can trace the culture of violence & instability in our society to many factors: video games &psychotropic drugs are the main ones. if obama wants to take on the NRA, he needs to take on big pharma too

I can't even begin to imagine their horror while in the final moments of their lives.

I also have to applaud the media (or at least CNN because that's what I watch) for making an effort to remember the victims. They are constantly saying their names, showing their pictures, describing their personalities, etc. Right now, they're talking about Grace McDonnell, a 7 year old who was "always smiling" and a "girly girl". Stuff like that is important, and commendable as well.

I also commend the parents for going public about their children, rather than hiding away (although I wouldn't blame them). When you hide away, then all the media has to focus on is the killer.

I disagree. It pisses me off that he killed himself. He deserves to SUFFER, and you can't suffer if you're dead.

I agree that the sensationalism is bad and the media does give them too much exposure but I think it is necessary for his troubled past and issues with mental illness to be given attention. It has started a conversation about the the stigma and misunderstanding associated with mental illness and the huge deficits in the health care system that lead to terrible acts like this. That conversation needs to happen to make the necessary changes that will hopefully prevent things like this from happening again. Someone who is mentally stable is not likely to see someone like Adam Lanza on the news and suddenly become inspired to emulate him. Helping people when they show signs of mental illness and getting them treatment will help prevent it from happening again.
