It is clearly hip hop, as are all of Macklemore's songs.
Yes, it doesn't sound the same as the hip hop songs that were dominating 5 years ago. But that's the last thing the genre needs in the mainstream. It needs something new and refreshing, something that will attract people.
Drake does crossover quite well compared to most hip hop artists atm, but still not very well, if you compare him to how people like 50 Cent used to do back in the day on pop radio with some of their songs. The genre can definitely be resurrected.
