I don't think that was his point . Sometimes people kill theirselves for the sole purpose of making others suffer the consequence. But for the majority of the time, if a suicidal person really knew the impact death can have to the people closest to you, they would reconsider.

I find the term selfish to describe suicide as incredibly harsh. I don't think they realize how much it's going to hurt others when they do these things, but to call them selfish is incredibly unreasonable.

I think there is a danger in labeling suicide "selfish" because it is attaching an even more negative connotation that would make it even harder for those with suicidal thoughts to want to seek the help they need. Suicide is already an understandably taboo subject and if someone has those thoughts they are likely already very ashamed of themselves in general. The idea that they will be further judged and criticized if others knew what they were thinking of doing isn't going to encourage them to seek treatment.

I'm sure there are cases where a person who commits suicide is doing it for selfish reasons or more impulsively without thinking of the implications, but in the most preventable cases I believe that suicide is something that the person carefully thought about for a long time and ultimately convinced themselves that the people they were leaving either wouldn't care or would be better off without them.

Everything is pretty much selfish. Killing yourself, another, getting more than one wrap at a deli....we're all selfish. The level imo is regardless. It depends tbh. People aren't in a good place, and OTT morality isn't helping them.

Sacrifice is the only true selfless act I can think of in every situation.

Even if you commit suicide because you think the world would be better off whithout you is still selfish to the root because you're pretty much thinking your existence is having such an impact in people's life/world/universe/whatever.

Because my dad was an alcoholic and depressed, I deserve to grieve and suffer? This post ****ing disgusts me. I didn't have a good relationship with my father, he pushed my entire family away with his mental abuse. I don't deserve to suffer because he was ****ed up. I didn't choose for the way my father treated me, so why do I deserve to grieve and suffer? You only have so much persuasion over a depressed alcoholic.

You can't really umbrella all mental illness under one category - and it should be treated as an illness so "selfish" isn't really a proper adjective to use, even when it seems that way.

I'm sorry, but i hate it when people say that. I feel really bad for the ones that do commit suicide and often they do it because they don't think anyone cares at all about them and it's really sad that they see no way out. I know from experience.

I can sit on my high horse and judge anyone who commits suicide as "selfish", but at the end of the day, I can't relate to what they're feeling, so I don't think that's fair. To me, it does seem incredibly selfish, you're leaving your family and friends absolutely brokenhearted. However, as I said, it's not really my place to say that because I don't know what they're going through.
