It's interesting how no mainstream female black artists bar Rihanna and Nicki have done dance music - didn't black females used to OWN dance music in the 80's/90's? Donna, Janet, Sonique, CeCe Peniston, Crystal Waters, Shannon, etc.
They HAVE though sis. And well....
Kelly is more r&b in the US, but dance everywhere else. Alex is a pop artist mostly and is very mainstream. They do it sis. The US is too closed sadly.
But have that many black artists tried to make the kind of music, that kind of retro pop/soul with melodic sensibilities? The urban sound that most urban artists go far is a bit more removed from Adele's style or isn't melodic enough for pop.
Bruno Mars kind of made music like that too. Cee-Lo is black and Forget You falls into that kind of vein of music. And it was embraced by pop radio. Yet, that song flopped on urban radio? There's the divide right there.
Nicki Minaj is laughed at and ridiculed when she dares to step into the dance-pop world whilst absolutely nobody minds Maroon 5 doing it. Society just be that way I guess.

Jennifer Hudson did Night of Your Live on Nothing But the Beat.
I'd just like to point out that while Shakira is Latin American she would not be considered to be a woman of colour there....she's white. She looked exactly like Britney when she broke through worldwide with Whenever, Wherever. This is in response to someone listing her as "a woman of colour". She has a very mixed heritage but her skin and features are a white person's. If she told you she was Spanish you would believe her and would you consider someone Spanish to be "of colour"? Just because you're not anglo-saxon doesn't mean you can't be white.
This being the most liked facebook post in history makes me so uncomfortable.

More will surely pop up but no one will reach the staggering relevance of Rihanna. And who cares if there aren't more if the current ones are still churning out hits or booking the Superbowl stage? They clearly are at the top.
Rihanna has trascended the (very real) barriers placed on black women by acting like any white pop star would from "SOS" onwards. That's a song that could have gone to Britney, to start with. And after that if you look at the Shut Up and Drive video it's pretty obvious, it's practically a Britney video, also has her as a pop/rock girl with her backing band rocking out). But she's also retained her "urban" status by still making poppy R&B songs and since she's an Island girl, she can get away with songs like Rude Boy that appeal to pop and urban. It gives her a certain "flavour" and that's why she's big all around the world. She can go from a pure house track like We Found Love and then make a song like Birthday Cake smash on Urban effortlessly, or act "thug" and make that believable too. She has the best of both worlds and is in a really, really privileged position. She's the perfect pop star right now because she can do any genre, any kind of song and make it smash.

Alexandra flopped HORRIBLY with her last album and Kelly's pop version of the album she promoted internationally was a massive bomb. They're not really doing it.

Rihanna has done much more than R&B and Pop though (reggae, alternative, etc.). She's just the most versatile artist because unlike other artists who sound the same no matter what genre they tackle, Rihanna is able to successfully blend her voice with various genres.

This so much. It's so disturbing, the underlying racism is BLATANT and the hatred Nicki receives is just unbelievable. Yes her pop music is really lowest common denominator stuff but "your image is cancerous"?? The image of a black woman not being afraid to flaunt her curves, or dress up "creatively" (), or make dance-pop? Why is he not posting about Katy or Gaga or Ke$ha or any of the girls who make similar music with similar images?

Yeah, Rihanna is a really special situation. What I find really interesting is that almost every single she releases to urban becomes huge. Yet, her releases to that format are far more irregular than her constant releases to pop radio.
Any other artist who would have tried to have irregular releases to that format while catering much more to pop would have had a backlash.
I mean, even when artists try to cater to both formats equally now, they still get backlash!
Yet, she's able to not cater to them all the time, and they don't care. And yet, they're always hungry for her new releases. It's really something else

BUT. they still made records. That's the point. Before the album's came out they had hit singles. Alex poor girl had no airplay, and I noticed Kelly was struggling to get a lot with DFW too.
